Dilla, you had to be more realistic about the prices. Like C.R.Y. said, $40k will get you a G37 coupe and change, but even just navigation will put you past $41k. so obviously for another 150-200 hp (depending on which GT-R model) and gobs of extra performance hardware (engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, etc.), it's going to cost a lot more. It's been hauling ass on the Nurburgring, with unofficial lap times in the 7:30s. Apparently Nissan is hoping for it to steal the crown from the Porsche Carrera GT as the official fastest production car around the 'Ring.

^^ yeah and apparently its been keeping up with the gt on the track....

is the carrera gt the fast car period, or just fastest stock?? im sure peeps throw their tuners on their as well..

oh speaking of the ring, i just remembered a vid i saw a while back titled "the fastest time on the n'ring" or something like that... and it started up with a guy with a nice lookin 02 or so bmw 520i.... and you're thinking, wtf? then it shows him driving past the guard barrier as it raises and instead of making the first turn, he just goes straight off the edge... its much funnier than how im explaining it.... but i cant find it on youtube...

The Carrera GT has the fastest OFFICIAL time out of any stock production car to be tested. There are tuner cars, one-off cars and race cars (non-street legal, non-production) that are faster, but those don't count.

And I have seen that video, it's kind of random. You'd think that the car is a sleeper and the guy is going to drive like a madman, but he crashes right away instead.

so the skyline name is dropped in all markets now... what with how popular the name is with high school rice burner boys...
The dropping of the "Skyline" nameplate isn't because of "high school rice burner boys," it's because Americans are stupid.

In Japan, they have various models... the Skyline, the Skyline GT-S and the Skyline GT-R (the one that we all know and covet) are some of the popular ones. However, most Americans are only acquainted with the Skyline GT-R model, but simply refer to it as the "Skyline."

As you know in America, Nissan and Infiniti are pretty much the same company, except Infiniti is the luxury division of it in the U.S. to cater to Americans who indulge on spending more money on the same vehicle but with a nicer interior... think Tahoe/Yukon, Avalanche/Escalade, Expedition/Navigator, Camry/ES350, etc. The Infiniti G35 we've had here for the past four years is sold as the Nissan Skyline overseas, though not to be confused with the GT-R model. Most Americans are just too stupid, and when some G35 owners switch to the JDM emblems (which read "Skyline" on the trunk lid rather than "Infiniti"), the uninformed think they are seeing a Japan-only GT-R on U.S. soil since they don't know the difference in nomenclature. Nissan probably figured to avoid confusion and further distinguish the GT-R from other models, they just dropped it altogether. Because of Americans.

haha, i forgot to add a sentence in my last post... i know they didnt drop it because of the ricers.. what i meant to say was that if you asked a ricer the best car in the world, they'd all just say the skyline... they'd see it as the benchmark to which all cars should be judged..

i know the car is pretty damn fast given the amount of power it has.... but it doesnt deserve that much hype...

I'd say it deserves it. Not that it's revolutionary or anything, but most people will look at it and compare it to the similarly priced Z06. Well, the pre-production models have already beat the Z06 on the Nurburgring and should post similar performance figures (acceleration, braking, cornering, etc.), maybe even slightly better in some areas due to the AWD system. Plus a shortcoming of the Z06 was its difficulty as an everyday car, whereas I'm sure the GT-R will be much easier to use on a day-to-day basis. Hypothetically speaking, it can be an all season car when fitted with the right tires. Let's not forget that Cosworth helped with engine tuning and Lotus helped with suspension tuning... two big names in those particular areas.

Besides, it speaks volumes when a company's car is gunning for the fastest production-spec car on the Nurburgring, one that costs $350k.

^ It will be limited enough to the point where you won't see them all over the road, but not so limited to the point where you won't be able to buy one or be on backorder for a year. I'm sure there will be TONS of Americans who will fiend for it, but realistically speaking, not that many people will buy it because:

* There will be people who want to buy it but won't even be able to afford the $67k base model, much less the all-out model rumored to get closer to $100k
* There will be people who can afford it but have a problem with spending that kind of money on a Nissan, when they could buy a more prestigious and more luxurious though slower car.
* There will be people who are amazed by its performance and buy it, regardless of their income (whether it's too low to buy a $70k+ supercar or too high to be seen in a Nissan)

And when I say that not many people will buy it, I'm not saying that Nissan will have trouble selling them or anything of that sort. I'm just saying that there won't be 5,000 Americans snatching one up every year, and I'm sure Nissan knows that and won't send nearly that many to the U.S.

i think the fact that the car is cheaper than supercars yet beats many of them isnt gonna make someone go out and buy one... unless they're in it for the status, the way supercar buyers are, there really is no point in spending that much...

with 68k you could buy a loaded 3 and maybe a 5 series beemer... if you dont need that kinda performance from a car, then why buy it? i think its really just for those that want to just beat someone in a 0-60 on the street which is dangerous, or for those that actually take their cars out to the track and race them head against the porsches and ferraris... or it could be used as a car to drive around in, but it wont be much fun... similar to the z06, although the vette is an american car and the pride of american cars and what with all the slogans saying to "buy american" i think the z06 would probably slide by... the gt-r probably wont...

Um... I believe the fact that the car is less expensive but viciously faster than most others is ALL the reason why someone would buy it. What other reasons are there? It's the same reason why I bought my car, so I can have something that can keep up (and beat) cars much more expensive for only a fraction of the admission price. So why would there be no point in spending "that much" ($70-80k) compared to spending double or triple that on another car with less performance but a big name? To some people, it's worth it.

I beg to differ. You can't really make that argument about being able to buy two different cars for the same price, since you could say that about anything... that's like saying why would somebody buy a Bugatti Veyron, when you could get a Ferrari F430 and a family hauler (Benz or something) and a house for the same price. Besides, $68k will NOT get you a loaded 3-Series (assuming it's not the M3, a 335i can get close to the $50k range) and a 5-Series. Far from it.

Anyway, while drivers don't always exploit the full potential of their cars, some do. And I think car enthusiasts in America would have more of a reason to look into a GT-R than a Z06... American pride aside, the GT-R is already looking like it will dominate the Nurburgring, as it has already unofficially eclipsed the Z06 and the GT2, plus I can guarantee that it will be a FAR more comfortable daily driver. Plus I think anyone could enjoy it, as the AWD will definitely help in the rain, plus for people who live in snowy areas could ideally use it with snow tires.

BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY... it is most definitely a supercar in terms of the performance it generates. But on top of that, it will be MUCH more practical than anything it competes with. People who have the funds for Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Maseratis typically have several other toys in their garage. While some of these people are also potential GT-R customers, the GT-R customer base will also include more "regular" people who don't have massive bank accounts, so more than likely this will be their main car. The reason why I bring this up is because it is a known fact that a lot of the supercars, particularly the Italian exotics, aren't meant to be daily driven on a regular basis for the morning and afternoon commute. Even Maserati has admitted that their older cars tended to have noticeable reliability issues at less than 10k miles, but since drivers today are driving their sports cars more frequently, they've been re-engineering their cars to make it to 30k miles, hopefully trouble-free. But I BET the GT-R will be the truly daily-driven supercar that you could use for your commute with reasonable comfort and tack on 15k miles a year with no issues. Not that the maintenance on it will be cheap, but rest assured it will be much more economical than owning a Ferrari but with all of the speed and then some.

It will truly be an amazing car, I really cannot wait.

well, not to be anal about it, maybe i didnt understand what you said, but 53K will get you a 3 series with every single option available..that is, a 335xi

then, a 550i equipped with everything but the bullshit options (active cruise control, rear side airbags) hits at just over 68k...

about people buying the veyron instead of a house and several $100K cars, like i said, its about the status... i think people buying these cars like it for the same reason american car enthusiasts love the z06.. its sort of a tradition... sure the veyron isnt so much a tradition here, but its for those that want to show off on the track... because they sure as hell arent going to on the road...

for the f430, is it not more of an everyday car than an enzo or a veyron?? which isnt to say that the f430 is an everyday car, but relative to the others, i think its more driveable...

the way you bought the evo, probably not to show off as much as to have a quick, everyday car that could compete with the supercars... once again, others want the supercar just to show off...
