Learning French

#1
I think I should take it up on myself to learn a new language.

I wasn't really that good at English when I was at school, it got me wondering 'Why the hell they were teaching English when I AM English?'. Now I realised that if I had payed attention in school I would have probably learned something, and wouldn't have had to teach it to myself later along the line.

So anyways I've reached the peak of my own cultural literacy, and I want to learn french. I did the basics when I was in school, how to count to ten etc, but went on to study and take German at exam level. I think it would be pretty cool to learn how to swear in French too. But my reasons for this is because I will maybe be looking to work abroad in the future and am more than likely going to encounter bilingual or multilingual people in my profession.

Are there any french people on here? or have you taught yourself another language?

'Sal pute' (dirty whore) = best sounding curse ever!

Learn Spanish instead. It's a better sounding language and more useful.

I had French for 3 years in high school but all I learned was not to tell the teacher to shut up or call her a dirty whore and that filling in half of your French exam in English and then leaving after 15 minutes makes the teachers who were checking for cheaters laugh.

Learning spanish would be no good to me.

Since we British take example of fine quisine from the french It would be better for me, if I were to get anywhere in gastronomy, to go where the frogs are, instead of bulls.

French is a one awful language to me.
I came to that conclusion after few months of studying it.
I can't stand hearing men speaking French - It's just too gay.

I also studied English (I live in Poland - a non-english speaking country), German, Latin and a bit of Japanese.
I must admit that I hated French most of them all.
I even found German better (it really sucks too tho but I guess it's the most similar to English - especially grammar).

If I had to choose languages to learn from the start now I guess I'd start studying English and Japanese.

Latin is good because most languages use it, it gives you a lot of so called "knowledge".

Japanese is quite easy really. After a year of not so hard studying you'll be able to chat using basics.
Kanji, Kana and similar are harder to learn but it's required only for reading Japanese and still they are really not that hard.

OMG this thread makes me physically sick.

Learn a language that doesn't make you sound like an asshole.

Spanish or Japanese are good languages to learn.

no, French people don't have a hard time writing French, Quebecers have a hard time with French. Figure out why, they are descendents of prostitutes and farmers. :) (2nd sentence is a joke Carmen hihi)

It took me two months to learn it, just because I was in a completely French environement.

It's not that hard. It sounds really beautiful.

It sucks for cursing though.

It's just a quebecer swear... Crisse, Calice and Tabernacle are stuff that you can find in church. They were swears back in the 17th century. When France decided to colonize New France, the colons came with those expressions and kept them.

So it is French.

Aren't you an Algerian anyways?

french is beautiful. you know we can blame our french for being americanized but franceMs french is any better. instead of calling a parking lot a "stationnement", they freaking call it a parking. all those english words they use instead of using the french versions. they are not better than us.

personally i can write french very well.

i'm half insulted by you.

^I was joking Carmen. But hell, it's true that Quebecers ancestors are ruined farmers who came here for a better life and there was a few ships of whores sent by Louis *something* to populize the place.
