How stupid

See my bf bought the Sims 2 for my sister for Christmas. When I install it, it doesn't work. I check the system requirements and I notice I need a 1000 mega hertz processor speed at least. So I was fine. But then I notice this * that brought me later on in the system requirements which specified that Intel processors needed 2.4 giga hertz and 500 MB.

Guess what? My processor speed is 2394 mega hertz (2.394 giga hertz) and 478 MB. I am so pissed off.

Is there anything I can do to increase the speed and the physical memory without buying anything?

Ps And no I don't wanna overclock (or wtv it's called) my processor.

try opening up windows task manager if your OS is microsoft windows. and execute come of the running applications in the "processes" tab. maybe your physical memory is low and is being used up by programs running discretely in the background.

be more specific than saying it doesn't work. what happens, exactly?
basically I appears that I don't have enough physical memory and processor speed to run The Sims 2 on my computer. I wanted to know if there's a way to fix this without buying a new graphic card or processor.

To be honest you are running on a pretty outdated spec. My pc is 3.2ghz with 1gb of ram and that is now outdated. New games need new hardware and there isn't much else you can do about it :(

I know how you feel. My computer is well out of date now. I got it in 2001. I meant to buy a new one but im gonna wait til summer. I have an xbox 360 but an up to date pc with a good graphics card is better for games than any console imo

yes, but did you figure this from looking at the box and then looking at your computer's specs, or did you get an actual pop-up stating your memory is too low? in all my gaming history i have never once encountered this message, which is why i'm asking. be very graphic, from the beginning. if not fixable without a hardware upgrade, i'm asking for the amusement. you double click the "The Sims 2" icon. what happens next?

you have a 2,4ghz processor and 512mb of ram as the system requirements specify. there is no such thing as 478mb of ram. i'm not sure where you got those numbers but maybe it didn't account for the resources that were actually being used as far as the memory goes, and that the processor "underclocked" itself due to high temperature. i have often seen the same irregularities with processor speeds and memory in various system interfaces and related programs before, but if you get an odd number you have whatever it's the closest to basically. for fuck's sake, if you haven't done it regularly or in a few years, to clean out the computer of dust. unplug the processor fan and cooler grill, get some cooling paste to put on the processor chip, and somehow clean every fan, grill and part of the dust. make sure you wear something anti-static on your hand and that you don't use water lol. this fixed a similar problem for me once where my computer would crash a lot whilst doing chores. if i'm assuming right you double click the icon and either a) nothing happens, or b) an application launches but then just disappears and you go back to the desktop.

I just re-read this post. 2.394Ghz is 2.4Ghz and 478mb is 500mb. when hardware is sold and mentioned in spec requirements its rounded up from actual physical amounts.

You never used dos, right? :p

anyway, carmi, if this is really the reason for your problems there might be no solution, if u need more memory, you need more memory. Anyway, like sandeep said, you can "speed" up your pc if you close other applications, try that.... but of course you can only speed it up so much (or little) and since you don't have enough Ghz anyway .....

So, basically, there's lil hope if this is truely the source of your problem, but we can't be sure, like preach said. Maybe it's something else. Any error popups?

also, in your bios you can monitor the temperature of your computer. if you do as i suggested and the temperature is relatively low (in the 30s or 40s, celcius) then overclocking is no problem at all. it won't blow your computer out or burn it up if you clock it only ever so slightly. up to 2,5 or 2,6 for example shouldn't be a problem. as for your memory, lawl, a 1gb ram chip is not expensive, much less another 512mb if you can figure out what type yours is.

lol. yes i have used dos and now that you mention it, i have seen that message before. but that's sort of dumb luck. that was maybe ten years ago. i have never had a pc that poor. but in all my post-windows 98 gaming history then. :p

Am I the only one who thinks that it's pretty weird that you have a 2.4ghz computer with 500 ram???

I have a 2ghz laptop with 1000 ram, I am going to take my 512 mb ram card out and replace it with a 1gig ram card so I can have 1.5g ram and run Vista properly.

not if it's an older computer. 1gb of ram hasn't been standard for that long. i can still remember when all the cheap and mid range models had 256-512mb ram.

its not necessarily the amount of RAM you have on your pc. 512MB should be fine. what matters is the performance of the pc when running the apps.

if you go into task manager (crtl + alt + esc) or (crtl + alt + del) then click on the performance tab, you can see the performance of your computer. if you look at the physical memory you check to see how much of the processor your pc is actually using.

e.g. my total physical mem is 523760k with approx 67728k available. this means im using approx 98000k as cache (which is used up by running processes even if youve finished using them).

what carmi can do is delete these processes from the processes tab (execute the programs/apps youre not currently using or dont intend to use until you decide to run the program or restart the computer).

for example, im not intending to use ituneshelper.exe or ipodservice.exe or MsMpEng.exe which is the english language for the dictionary. (the higher the figure of the mem usage in the mem usage column, the more physical memory you free up when you execute that process).

hope no one is confused. you shouldnt be if you run windows or know what windows task manager is.

it's not about ghz, it's about technology.
You could have P4 3.2ghz 3 years ago but it's like x times less efficient than core 2 duo 1.8ghz or even single core athlons 4000+ which are around 2.5ghz.

I have 4 gigs of 800mhz ram so to me it's strange to have 500mb these days :D

but The sims 2 should work on it flawlessly it you've got an average graphics and quite tidy system. Considering you don't have windows Shitsta as it takes your 512mb of ram and leaves you with nothing.
