Working on a cruise ship

#1
I been In catering for over ten years and wanna further my career as a chef.

I just think it would be the perfect job for me, gaining me some good quality experience, plus I'd get the chance to travel the world. It would be like a working holiday.

Are you asking if you should do it or just telling us?

Either way congrats.

Should be a lot of fun. Unless its a gay cruise.

i have been to a hiring event for a big cruise line company. i forget which one it was. i can't speak on what it would be like as a chef but from what they were telling all of us who went to this presentation thing, it was pretty shitty all around.

let me see what i can remember...the living situation. at first you would have to share a small tiny cabin with another person. after you have been on board with the company for some time you might be able to get a cabin to yourself. the employee living deck is seperate from the guests.

pay was shit. now this may be different from company to company but i would think most are the same. it could also be different for people doing your line of work. the even i went to they were mainly talking to people who build sets, doing audio and visual stuff, live show productions etc. but there pay was not based on your experience so much. in fact, they said all new hired people make the same amount of money. if you were just starting out with the company you would get payed just under 1100 bucks a month. you would have to sign a 6 month crontract with them. after that contract if they offered you a job back you would get a pay increase to just over 1100 bucks a month.

if you worked for this company for a year you wouldnt even see 15 grand a year. shit when you factor in taxes, the fact that you would work about two or three weeks on and then a week or two off you would still have to keep an apartment or some place to live. so you are still paying rent and other bills.

another really shitty part they mentioned was that you could not go any place on the cruise ship where the guests would. so you couldn't go to the bar on the boat or any of the other fun places they provide. you would rarely ever get to get off the ship and explore the places they dock at unless you happen to have that day off. you eat in a seperate part of the ship so the guests dont see you.

all in all it seemed like a pretty shitty experience in my opinion. but it could vary to company to company too.

in the end i bet you would make more money working in a city

^ I actually heard its good money working on a cruise ship but reading what you said and giving it a second thought it makes sense.

I do know you sign a contract with them so yea in between the time from one cruise to another you are pretty much fucked i am guessing.

Inform yourself before signing anything. Don't be a fool. Go to school.

Lol, i never heard of a gay cruise company, thanks I will keep an eye open and try to avoid them if I do :)

I'm 26 and still living with my parents, so I been thinking of ways to 'get out', so to speak, and thought working away from home on a cruise would be a good option to try. It is the hospitality trade after all, that's where the idea of 'accomodation included' kinda appeals to me.

what scruffy says is very on point. most people have distorted ideas of what this kind of jobs means. you are not allowed to drink alcohol or do anything like that while you're on the ship, safety precaution if the ship were to sink or malfunction somehow, you need to be sharp.

pay i indeed good and normally you work for a predetermined amount of weeks, then you stay on-shore for the same amount of time still receiving payment. that's how it works over here anyway.

so yeah, it can be a very cool job and all, just don't have your expectations up too high. :)

That's awesome you're a chef. I love and enjoy cooking myself. I think it would be a awesome job to have. On a cruise ship I'm really not sure how that would be. Just gather information before you do anything. I do know that I have seen workers from the cruise ship I went on out at the beach. Guess they were on break or off.

An update on my situation:

I got two interviews for two different cruise companies, at two different ends of the country! So I'm paying like £100 in travel fares plus I gotta buy a new suit and tie. At least I have the shoes.

One journey is like 6 hours long!
