What good is a gun for defense against home invasions if it is unloaded, locked away, and hidden?
Ermmm because as soon as you hear someone breaking in, you get out of your bed run to the closet (which is where our safe always was) type in your 4 digit pin and bang there you have it, pun intended.

I didn't read the articles regarding the gun-related crimes, but I doubt they occurred in somebody's home.
Exactly, therefore I should be able to have firearms in the home for protection because as you can see, no gun crimes occur in the home.

Glad you agree. :D

^Why do you need guns in your home to protect yourself? Invest in an alarm, get better locks, etc. Also what good does an unloaded gun locked in a safe with the bullets locked in a different safe do you when someone is "invading" your home. If you have time to unlock both safes load your gun and go shoot the guy, then you have time to creep on him with a bat or other blunt object. Also dude you sound like you want a gun for the hell of it, not for protection. Personally I've never understood why people feel safer with guns in the home. I remeber Bowling for Columbine and Michael Moore was talking about how guns in your house are more likely to be used on family members rather than intruders.. How does that make you feel safe?

moore made many false statements in bowling for columbine. if you want to see a fair rebutle to the movie check out the movie i linked to on page two of this thread. not to mention moore is known for making lies just to get his agenda across so using his movie in an arguement is just weak.

an alarm and locks aren't going to protect you. all an alarm is going to do is alert law enforcement. which depending on A)where you live, B) the number of people on that force in your city or county, C) the number of police working that day/evening, and D) what else is going on in the town/city at that same moment that law enforcement officers need to deal with or are already dealing with at the moment ,you could be waiting for them to arrive for some time. even if they can get there in under 4 mins that is still long enough to be killed by an person breaking into your home.

the stats for a gun being used on a family member rather than an intruder are very low. in fact there was a study done in 2000 that showed that 100 kids died from gun related accidents in the u.s. and that number may seem high but when you factor in the hundreds of millions of people in the country it is pretty low. actually more kids die each year from accidental drowning while taking a bath in a tub or sink than they do from accidental shootings. plus accidental shootings go right back to the lack of responsibility taken by the parents.

the smartest thing for any person to do, if you are pro-gun or anti-gun, is to take a gun safety and training class. the truth is you never know if you will be in a situation where you may have to use one and you should know how to use it correctly and responsibly. if more people took a gun safety class, either pro or anti-gunners, they would learn a thing or two and it would reduce the number of accidents related to guns.

if anyone really things that by being around firearms your chances of being killed are going to be greater than a person not around them then they are just a bit naive. i'm 24 and have been around firearms my whole life. i'm still alive. rukas said he has been around firearms his whole life too. guess what? he is still alive. both my mother and father and all their siblings have been around them too, and yes they are still alive. and so are the hundreds of millions, if not billions, of other people that own, have owned, and have grown up around firearms.

See, gun ownership sounds like a wonderful thing and it would actually work very well if everyone was a responsible motherfucker.

The big problem is that people aren't responsible. Simple facts such as children drowning in bath tubs and the Jerry Springer show are clearly illustrating that people are just not responsible.

Irresponsible people + powerful firearms = bad combination. If some deadbeat dad leaves his Glock laying around for his 13 year old to find....

Furthermore I don't believe it's a matter of legislation as much as it is about culture. North American culture is infatuated with firearms as a personal protection tool and a form of entertainment/sports. Combine that with a whole host of other factors such as (as Puffy pointed out) an over dependance on medication, general irreponsible parenting, drugs, whatever you name it, you get fucked up shit such as Columbine.
