I am really intrigued at this human thing.

Why do most people if not all think of the past and say, those were the good old days... then 2 or 3 years later they will think of the current days and say they were the good old days..

does life deteriorate as time goes on or do we love the past because we can't accept the present or the future.. or are we afraid of change..

i want to know damn it

it's because we seem to remember the good more than the bad. if you think about 5 years ago, you think about good stuff, fun, party, a gf, whatever u where doin back then...... but u rarley think about gettin up at 7 in the morning, going to work etc, that daily buisness....

lol @ 'this human thing' - it sounds like your talking from the perspective of another species.

On point. I remember my Grandfather saying to me when I was about 6/7 years old, that 'I should enjoy being a kid because it is the best part of life'. My response to that was straightaway: "Well your life must be crap then Grandad." I remember saying those exact words lol. I was right, and he could do nothing but agree after what he had just said. I was a smart kid.

The problem here is the concept of time. We know the past, experience the present, and visualise the future.

It is only natural to make oneself feel better, and one method of doing that is by reminiscing about the past. If the present is bringing no current joy, and neither is a daydream, why not?

Tell me can you feel me? I aint living in the past.

your mood affects your memory. if you're depressed you're gonna feel sorry for yourself and in order to do so, it's important for you to remember the bad things that happened to you. so when you go into a state of sadness, your mind will block out happy memories and mostly recollect sad ones. and like people already mentioned, when you're happy, you remember happy memories instead.

the "good times" notion... what we mean to say is that we felt different back then. the fact of the matter is whatever personal problems you have now you probably also had then, but like mentioned several times already, your mind "blocks" those problems. instead, you remember the things that you did enjoy, and since you only remember those things, you subconsciously form the illusion that you were somehow happier or enjoying yourself more "back then".

of course there are exceptions.

because when youre nostalgic you romanticise the past.
this is what the thread starter already stated. he wanted to know why that is though. nostalgia hardly qualifies as being its very own emotion as it overlaps several other types of emotions. it's a euphoric state. however, you can be nostalgic and sad and you can be nostalgic and happy. that still doesn't explain why it's natural for every human being to automatically do this without exception.

Apart from some music, theres nothing in the last 5 years that I am gonna think back and say "Those were good days". Since 2000 there has been nothing in my life that will make me think how great they were in years to come.

lol I still played with wrestling toys until I was 16, they were my brothers, but I used to have great fun. I remember I used to do shit like set up the "breakable" table in the ring and lay a wrestler on it, the rest another wrestler on the edge of my wardrobe and mildly punched the side of the wardrobe until the figure fell from the top, smashing through the wrestler and table below. I think I only stopped because I started breaking my brothers figures.
