Question to Americans

It seems like next year during my summer holidays I'll go to the states for 2 or 3 weeks to work in one of IBM's facilities. I will have a visa for a few months so I decided that I would like to actually use it and stay there for longer.

I'd like to check out how it is to live and study there - learn language, meet new people (locals and foreigners too) etc.
Today I thought of a nice idea but I don't know if something like that is possible - that's why I decided to ask here.
I'd like to find a school that organizes some kind of 2-3 month courses over the summer holidays. I'd love to live in some sort of hostel with other students (might be international students, that would be even better) where I could simply learn how it is to be a student there.
I've been considering to move there for a whole year but that would be too expensive and too long after all and since I picked a hard major my grades wouldn't qualify me for any local exchange program.
Any ideas?

All universities in the US have 2-3 month long courses during the summer. Everything you're asking for is possible but it might not come in a neat package.

1. A hostel with international students isn't a problem, but I don't think it's worthwhile to stay at a hostel for a month or more since you'd be paying per day, I imagine. But on the other hand, everywhere you find yourself in the states, you'd have an opportunity to find a room in a house with foreign students or rent an apartment with a foreign student/s. But that's something you might have to search out on your own (Craigslist, facebook marketplace, etc of the respective area, university, etc)

One good thing about universities in the states is that all students are enthusiastic as fuck to meet foreigners and talk with them, hang out with them, give them blowjobs, etc. As long as you're not some dull type.

I don't know how hard it would be for you to enroll in summer courses. I don't think your grades really matter, I think it's rather easy to enroll most places as long as you got the cheddar.

If you can narrow down the locations of IBM facilities where you might work, that would be easier..

im sure America has enough polish immigrants already, if the states are anything like the UK :D
1. I don't plan to move there, at least not any soon. It was always my dream to see how it is to live in a few places worldwide.

2. Various specialists from foreign countries are actually what makes America what it was for years. If I ever move abroad I want to actually work and pay taxes in that country.

i think its cool that you want to visit the states dont get me wrong, but polish people earn up to 5 times the amount of money working in the US than in poland. i worked in the same kitchen as someone from poland and they told me how much more the pay is here in england than back home for them in poland. so im thinking that maybe this ties in with your situation somehow too, be it for economical reasons maybe?

Thanks very much for your answer.

Well, the problem is that I'm still not sure where exactly I would be working since there are many places where students from here go. Currently our university has contracts with a few major companies and IBM is the most interesting of all of them but they have a lot of smaller facilities and partner facilities in the USA.
I'll probably know everything in February or March when everything is actually organized but I would like to start planning everything earlier.
However I'm aiming for Honolulu or Hilo since it'd be awesome to visit Hawaii. I know that there's a huge university in Hilo as well as some smaller colleges in Honolulu. I'm just not that familiar with American system and what to search for.

How expensive could it be?

Yeah but that doesn't really work for people doing IT and some other technical branches. Most people going to england are guys who couldn't handle their lives here.
Poland needs specialists and pays good, not as good as the states or UK but life here is also a bit cheaper and right now it's my home. Not to mention that I actually want to spend my money to live and study there.
The only job I'll be doing there for those 2 or 3 weeks will only provide me with a place to stay and money I'll spend to survive there for a short time.

so experience working for IBM in America would look good on your resume when you travel back to poland?

do you speak english as good as you type? i'm not bilingual so don't know if being able to type good in another language also means that you can pronounce the words as they are typed. the American language seems to me to be spoken a bit more formal than english people generally seem to speak, americans accent has certain emphasis on the inflections on words also

Well, look up some colleges there and check out their websites and see what different types of enrollment they have and how much is tuition. The thing is, since you're an "out of state" student, you'd pay about 3x that of an in-state student for tuition. As for cost of living, it varies so much that you'd really have to narrow it down an area within the city almost.

One thing about Hawaii, it's not the fairy-tale place that the movies would like you to think. It has one of the highest, if not the highest, percentage of crystal meth users in the States..some people say it's boredom..

Yeah I won't lie that a resume from IBM will look nice but the reason I go there is because I want to see how it is to live there. I could also work for IBM here.

I don't know about my language but it's far from perfect and I don't have many opportunities to use it apart from the internet and university. I think a visit there would actually help me a lot.

also, forgot to mention..

if four year universities end up being expensive, two-year community colleges wouldn't be a bad idea...or even language schools. The language schools are a great way to meet international students and I think with your level of English it should be fairly easy.

I'm well aware that it's not a paradise but since it seems to be a place that would suit me the most I'd love to check it out regardless.

By the way are there any courses in the states made especially for international students apart from language schools?
How does doing a 2-month course in a normal college look like?

I googled this:
http://www.uhh.hawaii.edu/
http://honolulu.hawaii.edu/
and this:
http://www.transpacific.edu/

But I still can't find any summer courses lol

Language school in Honolulu is about 2000$/month (dorm included) with 32hours of english/week but studying only english is sort of meh. I'd also want to meet some local people after all.
Something in between this and a normal college would be great.

edit: most summer courses in these language schools start in june while my holidays start in july.

Why import drugs from the main land when you can make some in your garage?

Masta, you will love the women of Hawaii since you're Japanophile.

Why don't you try something like New York or Boston? Hawaii is not the place I'd wanna be in the dead of summer. My aunt used to live there and based on what she told me, Hawaii is overpriced and overated the fuck. Maui is supposedly where its at.

Personally, I think language school would be a waste for you, especially at 2000/month. Your english isn't great, but it isn't so bad that you won't be able to communicate with people over here, based on your typing anyway. You'd gain a much better understanding by socializing w/ the locals.

My 2 cents. You're on your summer vacation, doing an internship at IBM which is something you do not wanna fuck up. I'm not saying adding a summer course onto that will fuck you up, but its definately gonna be an extra stress load that doesn't seem worth it imo when you can get the same experience for free and have fun getting it.

Internships only take a few weeks. I want to start some courses after I finish them.

I don't know but Hawaii, nice beaches, great weather, the culture, food and everything seems nice to me. I don't want to be in another typical big city. I'd rather get away from that.

Yeah, I could just stay there without studying but:
1. I'll be there by myself since it's almost impossible to find someone as crazy as me who would travel there for a similar purpose. That means it'd be pretty pointless to just stay there for 2 or 3 months.
2. Studying there would be probably the easiest way to actually meet interesting local people as well as other international students.
That way I would also experience the life there instead of just resting, travelling and sunbathing.

edit: I found some "Intensive english program" of University of Hawaii but it's also 2.5k $ for 8 weeks + quite cheap dorm - 600$/month. But why are those courses so expensive? It's almost 5 times more than actually staying there.

I concur with Sofi. Most North American women love ethnic penis.
I was literally about to post the exact same thing and use the word "concur".

You broke into my brain and stole my post. Fuck you.

Anyway I also concur. I've literally had groups of college girls all start talking to me at once the second they found out I was English. Although the next American girl that asks me if I know the queen, or, my all time favorite, "Say something in English!" is going to get a slap. On the ass. lol
