Producers: your favorite beats?

what are your favorite beats and why? i'll start.

e-40's "things'll never change" instrumental
why? because this instrumental is so well-composed. first of all, by the sound of it, only the drums are looped. the bass is played by a real bass guitar, obviously you have the wah-wah guitar and the piano that may be a digital sample, but has been played on a keyboard to sound like it's very real. there are not two bars in this beat that are identical. or if there are, they are far apart. it's so varied. the melody is nice, the sample is replayed and tweaked perfectly, and the mixdown and mastering of this beat makes it sound, well, perfect.

dj quick's "the proem" instrumental
first of all the beat is really dope. funky and nice. the synth that doesn't repeat itself once that plays for the first 1-2 minutes of the track is dope. the scratching and juggling combined with voice samples make this sound like some old mixmaster shit. "we gonna take this shit back to the mixmaster days". i dunno if quick mixed it but i know some tracks that quick mixed and he's good at mixing down tracks. dj quick is one of my favorite producers because like with the e-40 beats, his shit sounds so real. i love real instruments and the hardware sound because it sounds so refined and dope.

shyheim/big l's "furious anger" instrumental
the chopping on this beat is so dope. the voice sample makes it hot. i love clean, real instruments, but rough rugged "old school" sampled hiphop, with that underground "bad quality" sound is awesome. sound like it was made in a basement studio or something lol.

another one is hit em high from the space jam soundtrack

its very simple and seemingly doesnt change a lot but it's so damn funky and all the breaks and stuff makes it hot, and the melody is so dope that it doesnt need to be varied a whole lot. it's funny how such a simple beat can get one so amped up.

I go for sample based beats, it's the best sound of hip-hop to me and I've gone and fell in love with the digging culture and all that so to me, sampling is more advanced than composition in a wierd way. To me, sampling is Hip-Hop, compositions generaly sound to clean for me.

That said, Pete Rock is someone I really look too. I love alot of his beats, to pick favourites would be pointless because it changes so often.

I also admire Braintax's beats. Braintax is from England so alot of you peoples might not know of him. One track in particular shines to me, it's called Don't Drag Me In. Love it, but again, I like most beats from Brains. Lewis Parker is also a sick sample based producer/rapper from the UK.

Premo is a genius.

I admire much of MF Dooms work too for his own take on beats and Hip-Hop. He's dope.

mf doom to me is like the picasso of hiphop and i love his shit for sure. it's like abstract production. i have no clue how he comes up with the shit he makes. i can't even begin to understand, i can only admire and respect it.

i like original compositions but i too like a good sampled beat. and you're right that advanced sample chopping and arrangement is way more advanced than composing on a rookie level, which is where most of the producers on this board is at. i don't even know the name of chords even though i use them. i go by ear when i compose. trial and error.

i agree with the majority of what was said here.
i dont have a favourite beat, i listen to all the hip-hop productions i can to widen my perspective but hardly ever do i hear a beat and say to myself 'fiyaaaaa!!!!!'. i just think of it as chords and well-chosen samples. oh and rizzle, you dont know the chords you use?
i started out just hitting keys and any combination of 3 keys or more is a chord, i have learnt. so of course many wont have names if you used them by result of your own creativity.

oh and i forgot, a good way to come up with melodies (which works for me) is to take one chord and analyze the keys and try a different combination of them. then to give the track some nice feeling, use another chord and try to find a nice progression.

yeah i do that some times. yeah i meant i don't know the chords in my head. i can tell if i'm playing a chord or not though by ear. basically, i lack all the music theory so i go by ear.

2Pac - Starin' Through My Rearview (can you say omg? The sample is just the best there is, the greatest tune ever. The bassline keeps thrashing at you bar after bar - love it. Guitar - everytime it echoes through my ears it gives me an orgasm.)

Canibus - Poet Laureate II [first beat] (Colossal, haunting, bone chilling)

Jay-Z - A Dream (The electric guitar gives it a great atmosphere, the piano - simply mesmerizing)

Doja Clik- 209-415 (Dark piano in tha background is awesome. Has some bass playing tha same notes as tha piano, so it HITS like a mother. Whole beat just has a dark Doja Clik feel to it)

Dosia- Can't Trust No Bitch (This is tha beat you play loud in your car and just ride to. Has a little whistle in tha background that makes this beat what it is. Has some other little instruments too that sound real nice with tha whistle. Again, another thumpin bass line that will rattle tha trunk)

Lunasicc- Wicced Intentions (This beat is very very dark. Typical underground Northern California siccness, no doubt. Has a very dark whistle in tha chorus.)

Lunasicc- Pay Style Flows (This beat is dopeitty dope dope dope. It has this wah wah type things playing every 10 seconds or so that is just tha tightest thing i've ever heard. Nice bassline too.)

Lunasicc- What U Ask Fo (O my goodness, this beat is C R A Z Y. It has this guitar playing throughout tha song. Has some hard hitting kicks too.)

Marvaless- Ghetto Blues (This might be tha greatest beat i've ever heard. Tha beat is what tha title is, it's some ghetto blues. Different whistles, wah wah bass make this beat amazing.)

Maravless- Stompin In My Steel Toes (This beat is so funky just like Ghetto Blues. Has some nicely laid piano, really good clap, and some instruments you would hear in old school funk songs.)

MC Breed- Ain't No Future In Yo Frontin (Tha greatest moog whistle to ever be put in a song. Whole beat is just so crazy.)

Spice 1- Down Payment On Heaven (This is another one of tha greatest ever made. Has different piano's in it and I think I hear a sax in tha background, but it doesn't really sound like one. Tha sax type instruments is tha best part in tha song though. Tha beat is just very very relaxing, don't sleep on it.)

Young Ren- Satisfaction (Great, great beat. I'm sure not alot of people have heard it since it's came outta tha 415. Has a really tight whistle and this wah wah type sound that echoes.)

DJ Quik- You'z A Ganxta (Words cannot xplain this beat. It is incredible. Go listen to this song NOW!)

2Pac- This Life I Lead (OG) (Come on, we all know this beat is absolutely crazy.)

Personally my favorite would have to be dj premier. He produced the best songs on illmatic like nystate of mind and memory lane. The song that made me fall in love with is production was "when i be on mic" with rakim. If yall never heard i suggest u get it right now.
