Levels

One of the most annoying things for me to do during a mix is levels, especially if youre using industry beats which are often either too loud or quiet.

What tricks do you guys have?

The best advice I can give people reading this is dont boost vocals if they're too quiet, instead drop the beat. I usually drop the beat all the way and then bring it up until it's right.

I also try to leave a -6db space on everything before I send it to wave lab to master without dropping the master fader in Pro Tools.

lol the master fader in pro tools is useless and serves very little purpose in pro tool. but in general you shouldn't even really mess with the master fader, on any DAW or console in general, and just leave it at unity, or in pro tools don't even use one at all.

but it is important to keep in mind the dynampic range(maximum level, headroom, signal to noise ratio, and noise floor) of your equipment and storage media when you record which can play a big part in how your recordings and mixes come out sounding.

I know a dude that masters in pro tools, master fader, adds all his ish to it, I'm like what the fuck man damn? I don't do anything on master fader but have it just to see total output levels. I mix so it doesn't peak then drop all the faders without touching master fader so there's about 6db then bounce into wavelab and raise it up there.

Thats because thats how I taught you to do it
