i have the same mixer, but mine is the 12 track one. it's good. worth the money in my opinion. it also comes with a free copy of cubase le.:thumb:

if you can afford it, which i am thinking about buying soon as i get the money, i would buy this one by korg

it's really awesome. you can record straight into it, take v-tracks with it, use on board effects. the great thing i love about it is you can hook it up through the usb to your computer, open up the folder on your computer and you will find all the tracks you recorded into the mixer, in wav files in that folder. so all you have to do is click and drag them to your computer and open them up in a software program like pro tools, cubase, or nuendo and add your final touches to your mix. it's really the first of its kind that i have seen like this.

the mic looks like a pretty decent mic for the money and for what i am guessing you want to do with it. just remember to record your vocals in the right place, not in a big open room etc. and you can make that mic work great for you.

Not sure about the mixer, it looks nice and Alesis usually makes good shit. However, from experience Behringer's are also nice to get started with - theyre cheap and reliable. Im using the same 2-track mixer today that I started out with like 4yrs ago. Granted its just basic shit, but it gets the job done well [has phantom power to run your mic as well].

Also from experience that mic is beautiful. I just picked one up a couple weeks ago and like it a lot more than the EV Cardinal I also recently picked up - and the EV was almost double the price. Its got a pre-attenuation switch on it in case your signal is too loud [2 help reduce clipping/peaking] and a Bass roll-off switch which eliminates low noises like air conditioning, feet shuffling, as well as some buzz from a shitty cable. Comes with a nice case and spidermount as well...I love it, its a damn sexy mic.

After these you'll also need a proper soundcard - I'd suggest an M-Audio that way you can run Pro-Tools down the line. But a good soundcard will help U achieve better quality, as well as the ability to use more advanced programs and more advanced techniques of recording.

as far as which is better, its really just a matter of opinion. they are both good brands and make good equipment. they both will do the job, it really just depends on which one will fit your needs and works best for you.

the alesis i have which is basically the same one you are looking at, is easy to use and not hard at all to get the hang of, but ive used big 32 channel 8 bus consoles at school so it wasnt hard for me. i think you'll pick it up easy though no matter which brand you go with

if the mixer/soundcard he decides on works for him, there will be no reason to upgrade to a 'proper soundcard'. in fact, most of the (pro-tools compatible) m-audio audio interfaces are not (quality-wise) on the same level as the alesis mixer/interface he mentioned. what's more, the m-audio cards which are compatible with pro-tools are limited to pro-tools m-powered, which is in essence pro-tools LE (correct me if im wrong). if you look for reviews comparing pro-tools LE to Sonar 5 producer edition or cubase SX3, you will find that pro-tools falls short in many aspects. it is only the more advanced pro-tools versions which excel in most aspects and are worth ditching your current sequencer/recording program for. and these programs are not compatible with the m-audio interfaces, nor the mbox series (by Digidesign themselves). so the mixer will do fine. if you happen to come across cubase SX3 (a 100mb download) and upgrade to it, you will have a very good setup with that mixer. SX3 shits all over pro-tools and for what you want to do (recording) cubase LE should do the job. the quality of the Alesis is superb.

good luck with whatever you do

see for yourself... pro tools is nothing special, unless you're willing spend big cash.

however, there is an upside. if you need to constantly interact with studio equipment (the studio will most likely have a protools HD system) your pro-tools LE files will be compatible with their setup, so editing and such will be readily available in almost any studio.
