alright. here's the deal:

i want to seriously produce. i know basically nothing about production. i fucked around with sony ACID a couple times, but as far as making beats go, i'm clueless.

that's what this is about. MAKING BEATS. i need to know a couple things.

i have fruity loops 5, and i can really only find out how to make drum loops on it....not all that other shit you hear on songs - violins, trombones, piano....you name it.

now, i need to know the BEST beat making program on the computer. i don't care about the price, i just need the best one. where i can make the widest variety of beats. i mean, i wanna just do hip hop beats, but i want to be able to do strings and wind and percussion instruments all with the same program.

which brings me to my next question. is a computer program as good as an actual keyboard? i mean, can i do ALL the same shit? and is there any program i can get that would let me use my COMPUTER KEYBOARD as an actual music keyboard? ya know...where every letter is used to make a computerized sound? if so, let me know, and that would be great.

if not, i need to know about keyboards. can you buy keyboards that hook directly into your computer, or do you need to record all your beats live? name the best keyboard to get. the price. what it does. any special features.

basically, anything that will help. at all. anything you know.

i know this is a lot of information i'm asking for, so just give me anything that will help, and hopefully other people will fill in the holes. thanks.

there is no absolute best program. matter of taste. fruityloops is a powerful tool if you know how to use it, although you might want to extend beyond the samples and vstis that come with it. by that i mean download or purchase sample cds and more vstis. reason is another program that i myself use. if you hit me up on aim some time i'll show you the stuff i make on it. i think that the samples that come with reason are better than the ones that come with fruityloops, but often you have to dig up shit yourself. there are lots of great websites for that.

kanye uses fruityloops for some of his shit i think. lil jon too. so your creativity is the only thing stopping you.

as far as a keyboard goes, the nicest thing would be to have a midi controller which is a keyboard without any sounds. you connect it to the computer and use it to play the various instruments in fruityloops or reason. if you want a synth or sequencer im not the man you should be talking to really, i have little to no experience with those.

I don't know much about producing also, but i wanna become serious about it. I was told that people on here that recreate beats are using a Korg Triton, which has every sample that Fruity Loops does and more and it has that real live sound to it. Warpath knows all about it so you should ask him. I think it was over $1500 though :(.

that keyboard that you're talking about...what would the price range be on that? and do you know where i could get something like that?

thanks for the info. it really helped. and yeah. i'll definately IM you next time i see you on to hear what you can make.

thanks a lot.

i paid some 100-200 for mine, dont remember exactly. it's an m-audio keystation 61es, and you guessed it, it's got 61 keys. anything less is, i dunno.. you'll have to change the octaves a lot, kinda limits you.

oh, and additionally, a midi keyboard would be possible to hook up to a sequencer or a rack. like, for instance king dizzy suggested i got the triton rack. basically, you can buy the rack which is like the triton but without keys, and a midi keyboard, and save some money as opposed to buying an actual synth/sampler. so in a way you can say your setup will be open for upgrades in the future.

you have a couple of choices.
000000000000000000000000000000000000000000------

an all in one program, like Reason. very good, nice sounds, especially in 3.0.

a possible all-in-one program, like fruityloops, cubase, ableton live etc. very good, but you need to get VSTs (virtual instruments) to make it complete.

*a workstation keyboard like the triton, motif etc. very good but expensive.

*a midi controller with RACKs of the triton, motif etc.
saves a lot of money. a lot of potential and expandability.
this is what the pro's use. Scott Storch used a preset on the Strings card from the Roland xv5050 through a motif keyboard to make the Candy Shop Strings... basically you need some money though. one keyboard and after that just keep stacking the boxes. each sound module (sound box) holds about 1000 sounds.

' * ' indicates you also need a sequencer program and audio capture device to make CDs and export songs/sounds to the PC.

so i guess you would be wanting just a program and a keyboard. i would go for reason, and a cheap keyboard from m-audio or something.
im too lazy to get into details but i could write pages and pages and pages (and pages)
