pro tools is used by many many many artists, rap or not. however, pro tools doesnt actually have any sounds. it is just a really nice sequencer and general DAW program and when combined with pro tools hardware like the mbox (i think it requires supported hardware to run) then it makes everything very easy. but it actually has no sounds by itself. that is why you connect hardware like sound modules and software VSTs to the mbox or through a mixer and then to the mbox if you have more equipment than connections to make use of it. but it integrates everything really well and that is why it's so popular.

oh and if you want really nice kicks and snares, first you get some good clean WAV samples, pick 1 or 2 and layer them, EQ until both layers do not interfere with the other's frequencies (and also if you want to take out some other sound bands), and finally compress them.
some samples just wont compliment each other but you are sure to get some nice hits if you keep trying.
