I , personally ,

do drums first
a drumloop of 2 bars , sometimes 4 ...
for example

kick snare , kick kick snare ( bar 1 )
kick kick snare , kick snare kick ( bar 2 )

^^ I use this same drumpattern for the whole beat ...

So when I have that drumpattern , I copy & paste it so I have 8 bars

Then I add other instruments & bass & then I copy & paste what I got so far to 24 bars

16 bars = verse
+
8 bars = hook ( chorus )

depends...sometimes i'll get a sicc ass melody going then fuck wit the drums...other times i get the drums, then bassline, then melody...just depends on what type of beat i'm trying to make

i'm new to reason as well, but i've caught on fairly well over the last two months. i'm not too informed bout other software and music studio's, but reason has been the best for me so far. so my advice to you is ta just read the manuals and press buttons when it doubt. you'll get the hang of it and it'll definitely be worth it.

far as my process goes.....

like i said i'm new and this might even change over time. but anyway i usually come up with a melody. i just hum something up that i think is catchy. once i do that i figure out what kind of tone i want to set for the song and pick the right sound for that tone. after that i do the drums and then i play around with different harmonies to go with the melody. once that's done i get a bit of a high point for the song, or "climax".

one all this is sorted out, it's just a matter of arranging them all. far as bars go, i'm not really going off of hip hop or expecting someone to rap over my beats. so i just throw the patterns around as i feel. usually something like 4 and 8 every flip of the song.

i can make a quick beat in a matter of mins...

but sometimes i'll go back...take a few hours and really sequence the beat...i got all kinds of beats i made...and i've only posted about 15% of them on to my soundclick..so it can take me a day to make 1-5 beats...depending on how creative i feel
