Never owned a credit card.

Ive never owned a credit card, thankfully Ive always managed to live my life without the need. However the more I think about it, I'm traveling more and perhaps it would be a smart choice to get a card just in case of a "what if tho" situation pops up.

I'm not sure whom to sign with, or what traps to look out for (traps of interest, + other charges etc) as well as what the best deals are out there. I'm gonna first talk to my bank and see what they do but I'm not really jumping at anything as there's no rush to get one.

Anyways any help with this would be appreciated:thumb:

i too for the longest time never owned a credit card til 2006. i have right now a capital one card (visa) and ive kept up with payments. ive gotten a credit limit boost

just remember with your credit card just use it for emergencies. (Food, Gas, and the occasional going out to eat). dont get tempted on buying personal things, if you get hooked in then your bill goes way up. so does that finance charge. then its hard to pay your credit card off.

dont get into having a ton of cards, just have yourself one or two credit cards at best. i have a capital one, a target card and a JC Penney card.

If youve never had a credit card and a line of credit with a bank you're going to find it very hard to get a mortgage some day unless you got a huge down payment.

Explain this to me, since my dad pays for my credit card.

*waits for anger*

If I had a card and I went and spent maybe....$1000 this month and got the statement at the end of the month and actually had the $1000 to pay back. I don't pay interest on it regardless, right? It's not like they charge you for just even using it even though you pay the full amount on time at the end of the month?

The reason I ask is, does it then make sense, if you're responsible and keep tabs on how much money you have, to just not carry a check book and keep swiping away on that credit card as long as it's still under the limit? I know it's harder than it sounds, but if you could do that, credit cards just become an easier way to pay for shit without having to use cash (but keep some just in case) and not gain interest?

Yeah. If I spend say $200 at the store and two days later pay $200 onto my visa I don't get charged any interest. Its when you put $200 on the card and start making the min payments each month that they anally fuck you with interest.

You might as well use debit like gotti said. If not you still want a cc with low interest cause you never know and you might get in money trouble one day and then the interest will fuck you. I only swipe debit. :D

I have my own debit card, which isn't my parents money at all. But debit doesn't build up your credit right? Credit can go either way, but if you can pay what you owe in full at the end of the month, then you can build good credit.

They have credit cards for all kinds of uses. For instance, if you fly a lot your best bet is to get a card that gives you miles every time you fly. But for a basic credit card, your best bet is to get a Discover More card. It's got the lowest interest rate. 0% for 6 months. You also earn cashback bonuses every time you use it.

Other good cards are Capital One Platinum Prestige and Chase Perfect Card. Both are Mastercards. Those 3 are really the best. Not just my opinion, but the opinion of the banking industry. I would go with Discover. But whatever you look into, the interest rate should not be more than 12.99%.

A debit card wont open up a credit history with a bank.

When you apply for a loan banks look at your credit history and how good you have been with repayments, it shows them if you're a risk or not. Years ago I opened a credit card at every major bank and just let them sit there, because Ive never been flagged on their system they see I am a low risk loan applicant. They dont see what you use it for, they just see if you've had a problem repaying or not, so if you dont use it and dont make repayments youve never been flagged as a risk.

I could walk into any bank and get a loan because of that. Plus with the money I make, and that history, I could get a million dollar loan approved same day if I wanted to.... Hmmmm... SHOPPING SPREE!

Also dilla, if you're a student get a student credit card. If you don't have a steady job it may be hard to get one though.

I was given a credit card. They are handy for when the OOO (out of order) ATM machine swallows your fucking debit card, especially when you expect it to spit it out, and, you need another way to get some cash quick. I use my credit card for mail order purchases on the internet, having and using a credit card online ensures extra protection on your purchases, depending on your issuers terms and conditions. You will be better off using a credit card, a lot of hotels ask for credit card details on bookings, I wouldn't be without one. It is my favourite card in my wallet, my back-up so to speak
