I've just updated my resume, and this is how I laid it down:



Title

Personal details:
name
dob
ethnic/origin
marital status
address
tel

Personal statement:
Basically I just wrote about me, who I am and who/how I've come to be. I'm a chef, so I've had training and experience, and plenty to write about. My background, my attitudes, skills and outlooks. etc. I have never done a personal statement on a CV before, but this time I thought it was essential. I used to access public computers and found peoples CV's on there with some kind of statement. I have took that idea and now mine kicks ass.

I put a lot of work into my personal statement, what I wrote and how it came across. Being that it was the first thing my potential employers would see. This took up the first page of my resume.

2nd page:

Work History. Present first.

It was:

job title (ft/pt) @ place of work, where, from when - till.

Duties listed individually and specifically. I didn't want to start writing complicated sentences on my previous jobs.


3rd page:

Academic education

Academic qualifications

Personal interests/hobbies, favourite tupac tracks etc

references


If I had more time I would have gone on to put a photo of myself on there aswell.

your resume should only be max 2 pages. the whole point of a resume is to outline your skills and your experience. the most important things are the following:

Education
Work Experience
References

thats all you basically need..and ur contact information..maybe some volunteering that u did...

but thats it.


peopel get confused with how a resume works (as did i), but in my business communications class i learned that your resume that you show to your employer should be based on the job description/ qualifications.

so lets say for example these are the job specifications that your employer is looking for:

- pays good attention to detail
- can work in a fast paced environment
- is a team player
- an experienced user of the microsoft office suite


so basically u would look at each of those and turn it around to yourself and ask yourself what qualifications do you have to match these specifications.

so for example (in order) u would put down:

- was the cheif editor of the new york times
- worked at a laundry mill (not that strong of a point..but u get where im going with this i hope)
- voted favorite employee of the month
- certified user of the microsoft office suite


and basically everytime u go for a job interview this method should be used. also cover letters are a great way to outline everything. keep it short and simple. as long as you get your points across to your boss thats all that matters. fuck portfolios unless you are an artist or your employer asks for it.


i got a pretty good job offer a while back at ebay. pay was great. 16 bux an hour + free food and drinks all day and they would even pay for your school and shit too and all you would do is type and talk to ppl but the reason i said no is because the hours were nightshift..and theres no way i could pull nightshifts off....my days would get fucked up..so yeah man..considering the fact that at that time i only had a highschool diploma that was a pretty good deal for me..that was last year btw..

I don't know how it is in the UK, but here an employer will not give you the time of day if your resume is longer than one page. They have to go through hundreds of them a day, and they are not interested in reading your life story. The aspirations you have are all condensed into a single sentence, maybe two, where you state your goals with attaining the position you want.

In your case, you're not putting your ethnic origin because of equal opportunity. Who are you fooling here? You're thinking that putting your ethnic status will give you an advantage over other people.

btw, its work experience first then references and then education unfortunately. Nobody really gives to much flying fuck about your education, if you have the skill and experience, thats all they look for.

My resume is being handed to my now current employer (for promotion), and previous head chef that I used to work for. If they want to employ me, for higher roles, then they want as much information about me as possible. I ain't no nobody job seeker, I have a good long history in my career, and I want my employer to see this. I have kept to the very basics, but have spaced it out over three pages so that it is easy to read quickly.

not totally true. references can also go on a separate page. its good to have a minimum of 3 refernces. u can have experience first, depending on the type of resume you are doing. theres a bunch.

and the micrsoft word templates arent that great...u gotta fuck around with it a little bit


edit: and about the education thing..thats not true. there is no excuse for not having an education in a westernized civilization. even if its just a certificate or diploma, whatever..education is education..u gotta be educated theres no excuse whatsoever not to be educated...and just cuz some employers dont look at education..doesn't mean that all wont...

education has alot to do with religion..and life itself..so if your uneducated..ur out of the picture..thats how i look at it..i just hope God gives me the strength to stay on the right path here

I always put: references will be provided on request.

I don't no problem with references, but my cv is aimed at people who I know and have worked with before. That is enough reference.

And putting down avaliable upon request isn't the best thing to do always. I use to do it before but I learned its not good. It shows that you are hesitant to show employer that you have people that can say good things about yourself. Putting down their direct contact info makes it easier for employer to contact your references directly without employer asking you your reference contact info second time.
