Harvard restricts gym use to accomodate Muslim Women

#21
I dunno, guys...I consider myself a pretty liberal guy, and I fully agree that you have to reach out your hand to help a process like integration, but c'mon...these days muslims are treated as if they're made out of glass, everyone afraid to burn themself on political correctness. ugh..
don't know where you live but man, just tell me,i'd be happy to come there...

besides what's so horrible with 6 out of 70 hours of the week being set aside for women to be able to work out without men staring at them all the time.
Who the fuck wants to stare at them? You can't tell how they look. Unveil those bitches. Might be some ass under there.

Check Ilu's post. It's the double standard that pisses "us" off.
There's no double standard. Gyms are testosterone-filled, 90% male environments. Some women aren't comfortable doing physical activities in such environments. I don't see giving women 6/70 hours in the least used gym on campus as being something to whine about.

If someone said "I can't work out with Democrats, we need our own time each week to work out Democrat-free" do you think it would be allowed? Of course not. Why give special treatment for religion?

If they removed the fact that this petition was handed in my muslims, then this wouldn't even register on the 'I give a shit' radar for 99% of the people. Especially since it's a decision taken by a private institute for a privately owned gym. Ultimately, economics, not your emotion based reflexes, are going to dictate what internal decisions Harvard makes - it's the good old American principle of Money talks....So where's the problem Chicken little?
Good post.

I'm not religious and I don't see the problem, well I see it but I think it is miniscule. People are talkin about other gyms they can use that have all women hours, why no outrage over that. Why can't they be accommodated 6 of the 70 hours, is it that much. While they get their 6 hours in there are 2 other places people can use, what's the big deal. Yeah there is the principle of it but this shit is small, maybe if they granted an entire gym throughout the week to Muslim Women I can see the problem but no. Why isn't a place like Curves being yelled at, they only allow Women. These Women don't want Men seeing them working out, it so happens to be part of their religion. If they came out saying it's cus they are uncomfortable working out around men I don't think anyone would have a problem.

I would have to look at their reasons. Of course I don't think anyone who said that would have very good reasons for it as it's such a ridiculous thing to say.

Dude they just cover their hair. Most men don't stare at the hair.

i beg to differ.. while i dont get off to girl's hair, if it's a cutie and she has long straight hair, i could stare at her hair in the hopes of her eventually turning around so i can see that beautiful face again.... :)

as is discriminating against sex and religion? they should make the hours ridiculous like from 1 am to 5 and i'd be ok... if i want to work out at 10 pm, like many people do but i cant because 6 people are burning off shish kebabs from last night, then i am going to kill someone...

this is 6 hours a day right?? or is it a week? if it's a week, then i'll simmer down abit..

my work should accomodate me the right to have the bathroom all to my self between 1pm and 3pm because this is the time i usually shit in the afternoon. I am uncomfortable taking a shit in the bathroom when other people walk in and out. by doing this i would feel more relaxed to take my crap in the afternoon.

I think Harvard will find more women using the gym between those hours than normal. It's not like these 6 girls are asking this be Muslim gym time only, its for any female. If men wanted this they would get it. From the sounds of it theres more than 1 gym on campus anyway so any guy wanting to still workout between those times can go to any of the other gyms available.
I think the world has bigger problems than this.

If 6 people had told Harvard that they didn't want to exercise with black people or Jews or Muslims or gay people or fat people or people with red hair, then I'm sure Harvard would have accommodated those people too...
So, you're saying if I get 5 more people, they might accomodate my request?

There's no cogency to your argument. A more apt analogy would be to request the use of the women's toilets during a specific time. Silly isn't it?!
