I don't think it's fair of you to say that. I would never think you're Dominican for I have never met a Dominican here. You can't expect that much of people. I can't expect people to think I'm not Russian; hell, I can't expect people to think I'm not American.

It's not about being self-absorbed, it's because of a lack of cultural awareness, to an extent. You can't learn in school what a "Dominican" looks like. You were thought of as African-American on this board for a long time until you stated a couple of times that you're not.

It's not fair for me to assume people will know that I'm not African-American.

I agree and I try not to think in that way.

However, it's also not fair for people to assume that every Black person they come in contact with is African American, or every Latino person they come in contact with is Mexican, etc.

I said it was being self-absorbed because if you live in a diverse place like NY City, anywhere in CA almost, Chicago, etc.. you should at least know a bit about the people who you interact with on a daily basis. The fact that people would rather assume than just ask seems like self-absorption to me. I may be wrong, but that's just how I see it. It doesn't register on their internal blue print of importance. But I dunno. This is waaay off topic. LOL, sorry i'm at work bored.

PS. People don't ask because they categorize all blacks as African american. And 8/10 times they'd probably be right too.
Nobody can tell the difference just like Asians. That's why they call them "Asians" and not try to guess if they are Chinese or whatnot.

I don't get this. I like to think. My head is always full of thoughts and I can't stop it, so I choose to use the thoughts for something useful. Unfortunately I can't use them to blow my head up once and for all or I'd have done that long ago.

But really. I don't get this. I think people are jumping on bandwagons with me. First I was the crazy stonar who never made sense. Then I'm the analytic who always tries to come off as smart.

I really don't get it. I post what I think and I can't help what I think.

my thing with not giving a shit what i call somebody is just that, i don't give a shit. my mentality is such that if you are hurt by me calling you an american when you're canadian you are such a loser that i care not to waste my efforts on saving your poor feelings. patriotism is useless. staying true to your roots is one thing, but expecting everyone else to is a pipe dream and the sooner you kill it the better off you'll be. there are lot of things to worry about in this world, but where people presume you come from without having aaaaaanything to base that presumption on is one of the things that are pretty low on my list.

much in the same manner, though, i would never actually act or say anything because someone presumed me to be danish or german.

Yes, I understand your point entirely. However, one has to realize that we live in a country (US) -I can't speak for other countries- where a third of the adult population cannot name the current vice president and nine percent of people (according to what I read in the paper the other day) think that the Speaker of the House is a reality TV show. In other words, we're surrounded by retards. If someone can't tell you that Dick Cheney is the vice president, there's no way in hell they're educated enough to even realize that all black people are not African American, much less differentiate between them.
