Dilemma

Last week, i was driving down a street when a truck was coming against me. At a certain point, there are cars parked on both sides of the street. This is normal and usually one person waits before they come to this point to let the other car pass. Usually the car thats further away waits if you understand what i mean. So im coming up to this section of the street as this truck is coming towards me. I keep going because he is further back on his side so i assume he'll wait as im passing through.Unfortunately the ignorant bastard doesnt and keeps driving through. So im forced to pull into a little space between a parked car and another car that had just pulled in before i pass to park up.So i pull in to allow the truck to pass. no problem. But the guy who is parking up his car reverses and scrapes the side of my car above the back wheel. He never looked in his mirrors so didnt see that i had pulled a small bit into that space to let the truck pass.
He apologises and askes me what i want to do about it. Its dark, but i can see a few scratches on the car. Im not well up on cars and repair cost so i just assume that it wont cost too much to repair and i tell him that it should be ok.The car is a couple of years old but there are hardly any marks on it before this. He just tells me where he lives and to call into him if theres a problem. Now, when i look at the car in the daylight, the scratches are pretty bad. Part of one of them seems to have gone through to the metal. There is also a small dent. If i go get it repaired, it will cost a nice bit i reckon but im reluctant to go back to the guy who reversed into me after i told him it was alright.

what would you do in this situation?

^^that might work on some of them but one has gone right through the paintwork in part of it.

wish i could be a ruthless fucker. get out of my car and say "You gotta pay me for the damage bitch.

you are right though but he should have came straight out and said that he'll pay for any repairs. Ill get someone to look at it and see what the cost is gonna be first i suppose.

Go back to the guy. Worst comes to worst he's gonna have to pay your deductible. Probably between 100-300 dollars. Scratches cost a fuck ton to fix b/c your gonna be paying something retarded like 100$/hour just for body work which is a fucking rip off but thats a nother threadd, Just go to your insurer first and see what they say.

Why? Lol, why should he do that? You told him it's alright. Man up or accept your fear of confrontations and learn to live with it :p Trying to get away without having to pay after you ruin somebody's shit is like a survival instinct or something. Only sociopathic humans or people from 50 years ago actually respect this kind of etiquette, so for your own sake you should stop expecting people to own up to their mistakes, because 99% of everybody won't. :)

Edit: Did you tell him it would be alright or did you tell him it would "most likely", "probably", or "something else" be okay? If the latter I don't see how you are going back on what you told him earlier if you do contact him. At first glance your professional judgment was that it probably wouldn't be a big deal, but upon further investigation you've realized the damage is substantial. Whatever basis you used to form this educated opinion is none of his business. You're no expert when it comes to cars, but he doesn't know that. He told you to contact him if there were any problems. This is a problem. You're not breaking your word if that's what you're worried about :p

^^i just said i wasnt sure and but that i thought it didnt look too bad.

and it isnt that im afraid of confrontation either but i guess id feel like a bit of an asshole asking this kid to repair the scratches. i dunno. I really dont want to go through insurance again. I wrote off another car just before last christmas. An old man crossed into my lane on the dual carriageway as i was passing him. Eventually his insurance paid out and i got a new car but it was so much time and hassle to get it sorted.

Who wrote down his information? Did he just write it, or did you ask to see his drivers license/registration and copy down the correct info? Cuz most times, if the person just jots down information, its not correct. At least that's how it is here..that's why over here we asked to see the drivers license/registration and then copy down the information..

If he did it, first find out if the info he gave you is correct or not.

Also out of curiosity, do you remember or write down his license plate numbers?

Oh okay, in that case, just go to the insurance and tell them that this guy hit you and whatnot.

And for friendliness let him know that you were gonna go thru with insurance cuz during daytime the car looked pretty bad.

Is going thru the insurance a big thing in Ireland? (Not trying to be funny, if it comes off like that)

Over here, you just call them up and go to estimate place and then just drop it off at a body shop (most times, its at the body shop that they give u the estimate). The insurance usually gives you a car to cover the time that the car is in the shop.

All the paperwork and talking to the insurance the body shop does..or did in all my cases.

Simple procedure..over here, really.

^^well it was the last time i was dealing with them.

I was driving along a duel carriageway right? i was in the fast lane.I was coming up to pass this old guy who wass in the slow lane. Just as im about to pass alongside him, he decides to pull into fast lane and clips the side of my car which sends me into the crash wire. The cops arrived the scene and concluded that he was at fault because of where the cars ended up and he told them that he didnt see me coming i.e he didnt check his mirrors before he pulled into the other lane. They even breathalysed him. It seemed pretty straight forward. Just a matter of his insurance paying out but instead he decided to deny liability making up some bullshit story that he was already in the fast lane and i just drove into the back of him. I guess his insurance company were telling him to say this, i dunno. When they told me this, i just told them what the cops that arrived on the scene told me and gave them their number because they wanted to contact them. His insurance company said they'd ring them and then ring me back. They never did so i had to keep ringing his insurance company to remind him to ring the cops. I rang them maybe 3 or 4 times. Eventually, i just rang the cops myself and asked them to ring insurance company to tell them how he was at fault. They did so and about two days a cheque arrived in the post to cover my losses.

Damn, seems like his insurance company was an asshole, just didn't want to pay the money.

I hope that doesn't happen again, but if I needed/wanted my car fixed, even if it was a little hassle, I'd go thru with it, cuz shit, at the end of the day, it's whats owed to me.

Lemme know what ends up happening/what you end up doing. :)

Don't tell your insurance firm about it. When you get into car accidents, your prime always rises afterward, even if it's not your fault.

Unlike the police they do not look into the nature and the cause of the accident, for them, an accident is an accident, as for them, you are the type of person who puts himself at risk, even if you are a victim.

Also, check into the laws of your government's interventions to hit-and-runs.

Here in Quebec, if you are a victim of a hit-and-run, the state gives you a tax-credit up to 10.000$ to repair your vehicle.

that's exactly why i thought bobby didn't want to tell his insurance company.

It sucks. They are supposed to keep you thinking peacefully, not "omg, my rates are going to go up," during an accident.

Sure, it's only like $10-15 a month, but that shit adds up before it is dropped. *Usually a year or so later, correct?*

Thankfully, I've never been in an accident, but my ex was. Her rates went up. She was lost and getting directions... she was on the cell phone and parked by this guys house. He ended up turning all crazy and hit her front.

He told the lady he hit her b/c she was in motion and didn't look. But the dent he had, was already there, and her dent looked bad. They ended up blaming her. Geico didn't do shit, but pay his stuff and raise her payments.

Geico sux ass.

It's why I go with Wawanesa! No one I know has had a problem with them.
