Tupac - gangsta rap?

"Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
2Pac became the unlikely martyr of gangsta rap, and a tragic symbol of the toll its lifestyle exacted on urban black America."

I'd like to know your opinion on this, whether Tupac's music was or was not gangsta rap?

I mean, some people see him only as a gangsta rapper and stuff u know but he himself said in the 1995, Jun 28 prison interview that he has never performed gansta rap, that he makes rap music. Of course, things might have changed after that because he joined Death Row and we all know what happened after that, but he had some tough records before that too...
so what do you think?

ok, but would u say it's like this:
pre-death row - not gangsta rap
death row - gangsta rap

personally, I don't think Tupac was a gangsta (rapper), I think he was real and his music was spiritual... but I'd just like to know your opinion.

okey, my bad, the fact is I don't know what gangsta rap is, that's a part of my question, thanks for making that clearer.

Some history:
Alongside the rise of political rap came the introduction of gangsta rap, which attempts to depict an outlaw lifestyle of sex, drugs, and violence in inner-city America. In 1988 the first major album of gangsta rap was released: Straight Outta Compton by the rap group NWA (Niggaz With Attitude). Songs from the album generated an extraordinary amount of controversy for their violent attitudes and inspired protests from a number of organizations, including the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation). However, attempts to censor gangsta rap only served to publicize the music and make it more attractive to both black and white youths. NWA became a platform for launching the solo careers of some of the most influential rappers and rap producers in the gangsta style, including Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and Eazy-E.

I don't believe there is a genre called gangsta rap. It is just rap.

I mean you don't have gangsta country, or socially conscious country, it's just country. Like rap is just rap.

It is the media that classify it at gangsta rap, and they classify anyone who talks about a gun or death, as a gangsta rapper. Tupac's lifestyle also was part of the reason the media called him a gangsta rapper.
So my answer is no as there is no such thing as gangsta rap. It's just rap.

Dumb...dumb...dumb..

When will people realise Tupac was an 'Artist'. Music is an Art, Acting is an Art, Poetry is an Art, Scriptwriting is an Art. Everything about him says Artist, I don't know wtf people wanna turn around and say 'Gangster'. They be the people living in a dreamworld like depicted on TV through the media.

'Artist' not 'Gangster'. I get sick of saying this, some people are just dumb.
