if you are respected u might not be feared, but if you are feared you have people in your control and some might respect you so feared is more effective

Good question... I would say to be respected. If you were feared you would have alot more beefs than normally, because there will always be that one person contemplating behind your back, and before you know it you could be dead. you could look at it that way i guess.

So in reality I would say have both fear and respect. If you have fear, people know when you mean business, they can't say no. But if you have respect, they can say yes or no. So when you are determined to have something done in your favor always, I think its best to have fear.

Those who are respected may not generate as much authority or power as someone who is feared. So in terms of effectiveness, to be feared would be better. Yet, in the context of everyday life, to be respected is a far better personal quality to have.

respect. i rather have someone be able to associate with me and treat me how they want to be treated, than have people avoid me

fear cause if you have respect it can be lost a lot faster and easier in the blink of an eye as for fear that more LT and a little harder to lose....respect is always nice but these days fear runs a way deeper course on effectiveness.

I'd much rather be respected. To be feared is to be an oppressor. When I die i'd much rather have people at my funeral praying for me than cursing me in death!

Many of you talk about war strategies as if that is a good thing. lol, many of you aint never seen war and if you did you certainly wouldn't think that war and strategies associated with war are not something to glorify and live by. Oppression through ruling or attacking with a feared iron fist is horrific for human beings. To be opressed is not easy but to be an opressor is also not easy. there were more Vietnam soldiers who committed suuicide after vietnam than there were casulties in war.

To be someone who is feared is to be unjust to the people. And i'd rather be respected for speaking the truth and wanting justice infront of a feared unjust tyrant and be killed for it. I would laugh at the person who was feared, I would laugh at how STUPID he was, because I would be laughing at his arrogance. To want to be feared is the highest form of arrogance infront of fellow people whom are your equals.

Last week a friend of mine passed away. And I cried so much, not at his passing away, no. But I cried at the state he was in. This friend of mine used to be a very arrogant person. He used to wear the latest designer labels and he would never leave his house for a moment without the latest aftershaves etc etc
However in death when we went to put the kafn(shroud) over his body I cried because (as my friend demanded) when we would put the shroud over his head his feet would be bare and when we put the shroud over his feet his head would be bare. I cried so much becasue I seen this friend of mine wear the best and biggest most expensive clothes. But in death we couldn't even cover him up and the fragrance of aftershave was no where. Whearas he was the person who would have the mose expensive aftershaves in order to please the people.

Later on I was told that this brother of ours had demanded that in death he be presented with this shroud so he could show us the true reality of people. He had turned his life around from extreme materialism around a couple of years ago.

Being a student of Machiavelli I'd have to say it is always better to be feared then respected, if you are in power and are respected, but not feared, people may move against you, even if they respect you, because they are not afraid of what you will do to them and their greed will get the better of them. But if they fear you, they dont have to respect or like you, but they will be too afraid to do anything to harm you.

Stalin ruled by fear, Hitler ruled by the respect of his people!

Each has its advantages, but since i am never going to be in a position of ultimate power like everyone on this board - id much rather be respected.

Effective for what? personal gain? From what I remember from reading Machiavelli it is better to be feared - by your enemies.

respected, the people that make people fear them always end up fucking up, theres no way u can keep scaring people, eventually someone will get pissed and do something about it, with respect, people will trust u, if youve gained trust from people it means your a loyal and honerable person, people will lay there lives down for u if they respect u.

It's more effective to be feared.

Of course, most would prefer to be respected but like I say, feared is the most effective.

If people respect you, they may work hard for you.
If they fear you, they will work until they can work no more.

If people respect you, they may have your back.
If people fear you, they will kill & die for you.

Et cetera, et cetera.
