I always felt that it's never the doctrine that is evil, it's the people behind it.
Looking through most religions I've always noticed that the core concept of it is never really destructive. Obviously, when you pick up a sacred book and read the stories in there some are pretty damn extreme, but like I've said in other posts, I see it as a historical document.
The same can be said about a lot of political ideologies, how socialism for one (which is a great concept theoretically) eventually got twisted into Communism, and well, you know how history unfolded with that. Generally, it's always one person, or a group that eventually gives a bad name to something that may have been great.
As for God, shit, at that point it's what you feel most confortable with I guess. If you believe in a God, and you don't live your life to the fullest because of it, then I feel something is wrong, but I know a lot of people that believe in a divine power and it doesn't stop them from going out and getting what they want in life. Their thought process is pretty much... "When I die, if there's a God or not, I still lived my life the way I wanted to live it" which is cool by me.
To each their own, if they don't stop social progress and don't hurt anyone, believe in fanged vaginas if you'd like, but I wouldn't like it if that existed, I'd be a target, I gots a meaty penis
