I always thought a Discord group was a good idea. Or a Google Hangouts group chat. Or, since many are European and use WhatsApp, we could use that

So far everyone mentioned a different platform, which already shows why it wouldn't work.

I think Discord is the thing that doesn't feel like an invasion of privacy for most people while at the same time offering chats with community vibes. But most people wouldn't be bothered to use it. Also, we already have Streethop, which works again. If people move, it might become abandoned or communication becomes fragmented, which doesn't work well for such small communities.

Chats also dumb down the information by focusing on quick and easily digestible bits of text that disappear within minutes or hours, as opposed to true discussion and more concise pieces of information that just stay there and you can revisit anytime.

I'd be down to join a chat group as an alternative if enough people are in, if it doesn't harm the forums and if Rukas is fine with it, as I feel like that wouldn't be a respectful thing to do after all those (nostalgic) years and after the revival efforts. I'm probably more fine with staying here for as long as SH is up and running with the remaining regulars. In the end, after all that time I'll be checking in wherever the community is.

I'm not totally disagreeing with the sentiments. Discord is another viable option. Or you could look at a module for Tapatalk or something similar unless that costs money. Really, what I'd want is to get be able to set up push notifications for various forum events. Because I'm forgetful, and because I know I'd use it more then. And because the world has changed so I interact with the internet differently now, as do a lot of others, and it would be a scalable solution.

Yeah, what I had in mind was basically the Android thread we have but in chat form. I typically check SH on my laptop or iPad, because there's a bookmark for it. Otherwise, every other thing I do on a computer has an app that makes it easier. The Android thread is really just 5 people posting news or asking for advice or questions about technical stuff. We could just do a group chat for that kind of stuff with you, me, Casey, Sandeep, and whoever else posts once in a while lol. Just to keep it strictly to tech talk, because this forum as a whole is not about tech stuff and we don't always check by daily, despite there being a notification system on the site for new posts.

As for general, casual talk, I think the forum is fine for that but as Ruk said, there's a inner circle chat for members on WhatsApp or something. I don't think we're all that close that we have a general talk group chat off of the forums that gives notifications when people drop random thoughts. You guys might be, but not me.

I just wanted people to discuss tech news with and while Reddit scratches that itch sometimes, it's too big of a platform
