Read the description. They did buy him a 360, he was just sneaking looks and opened his present earlier, so they fucked with him. They gave him the 360 later.

i read the description, and according to engadget where this was posted a couple of microsoft reps actually saw this as well as engadget and contacted the family regarding actually sending the poor kid a free 360. They said they never actually got him one.
Regardless, even if the scenario had turned out that they actually got him one. Thats just a fucking mean spirited trick to play on the kid.
Maybe they got the box from someone that bought one, n00b. M$ is actually trying to get the kid a xbox.
Update: We've been flooded with email from well-meaning geeks and even Microsoft; just about everyone wants to help us hook up Jonathan. We totally appreciate the sentiment, but we've got this covered. We think we've gotten in touch with his family (who let us know he never got an Xbox, and the whole thing really was a prank on the poor kid); once we know for sure we have the right people we'll post again.
those parents are my heroes... im so doing that to my kid, but only if i can have a game system waiting for him in his room when he goes up there to cry his eyes out... cuz thats truly shitty if the family actually never got him one
