Prince: The Internet is dead – The Marquee Blog - CNN.com Blogs

The music industry might be embracing digital and online technology, but Prince is not convinced that it’s a good thing.

"The Internet's completely over,” Prince told British tabloid publication, The Mirror, in his first newspaper interview in 10 years. “I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can't get it.”

Prince is currently set to release his latest album, “20Ten,” for free through various European print media, including the Daily Mirror and its Scottish affiliate, the Daily Record. Fans can snag their copy this Saturday via the different press outlets, but you they certainly won’t find any of the new material online.

Prince has banned both YouTube and iTunes from using his music, calling the web obsolete.

“The Internet's like MTV,” he told the mirror. “At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you."

WTF is he going on about? Yeah, sure, it's dead. Since he's probably not stupid, he must have some agenda here. Maybe Casey can enlighten us. But first get rid of your Android, because it's just filling your head with numbers.

It's not so much that he's 'stupid,' it's that artists like him love to make these oddball comments every now and again. It's just a given with these people, their proclivity for shock and awe only grows ten-fold as their fame increases. And while this declaration is not so shocking, it's certainly out of the box, a head-liner, if you will. What's even funnier is that Prince can say anything and get away with it. He can proclaim tomorrow that unicorns are Japanese beetles and no one would question his sanity levels..

Ha Ha. Yeah, sure you won't.

Again, it's the Daily Mirror. Never get the football transfers right, and support Labour. Enough said. Shit paper for shit people.

I guess i must be a shit person then. No paper comes close to the Mirror for sport, especially the Premiership. Well up in Scotland anyway. Plenty interviews with loads of Managers /players, they might get some transfer news wrong but so does every paper. The sun and the star are terrible when it comes to football information compared to the Mirror. What paper you reading ?

Looking forward to gettin a copy of the new Prince album. Prince last double cd was hot.

Well, it's one of those things where he's like "The Internet is dead" and people are like "WTF?" and then he comes with a sensible explanation like, "I'm so popular that I don't need iTunes to sell records so the Internet is dead for me." What he doesn't understand/not thinking about is that there are artists making a living off of digital sales alone (plus shows, of course). The Internet can't be dead because it's eternal. We haven't even come close to reaching its full potential. I thought it was mind-blowing to go to the movies and see a preview for Evelyn Salt and then at the end of the preview see shit like "Follow Salt on Twitter". It's like WHOA MAN. I remember it wasn't like that back then and I'm only 22. Anyway, back to music. The Internet is just one of many channels through which you can push your music.

Plus, MTV isn't out-dated. It's just not THE source for music and shit like it might have been back in the day. To me it seems like it's not in touch with today's generation but shit, maybe I'M not in touch with today's generation because everybody seems to watch those stupid sweet 16, the hills, OC, and jersey shore shows.

I just finished a random ass show in some weird ass part of Canada and I'm too tired to reply properly to this right now, but a) it's a quote taken out of context, b) it's a misquote in terms of the wording used and c) he's talking about the music business model applied by most artists and he's not the first to say it. The iTunes/AmazonMP3/etc model doesn't fucking work. It's still the old music business model in a new digital era and there is a revolution [no pun intended] coming.

Prince is a revolutionary and these type of deals he has are smart as hell. There are at least 4 major magazines giving away the album including Rolling Stone in Germany, one of the biggest newspapers in Belgium, and there's deals in France and some other countries, as well as a "traditional" major label release by Warner Bros (his long time record label in the 80's and early 90's who he fell out with in the mid 90's, so it's kinda surprising and cool that he's working with them again as it might lead to deluxe editions/remasters of the classic 80's material). Each of those newspapers/magazines will have paid him a HUGE advance to be able to do these deals, so he's getting paid up front more than most artists will make over a year of selling their shit on iTunes (Apple take a huge cut). You can't hate on that. And the customer gets the record basically for free. And millions of people that might not necessarily check out the album otherwise, will do so.

^But if you're an up-and-coming artist in a college dorm room, you don't have the leverage that Prince has in negotiating deals. That's the problem with Prince's position on the matter.

I find The Sun spot on for transfer news. And you will be a mirror reader and Labour supporter you're from Scotland. If I were Scottish, I'd be SNP. :)

Well if you stayed up in Scotland and you are a fan of the Premiership, belive me you would have to buy the Mirror. The Sun, The Star, The Daily record are terrible compared to The Mirror when it comes to the English premiership. You either buy The Mirror and enjoy a good read about the English game or you buy the above mentioned and read about the SPL.

I didn't realise this. I have only been to Scotland once. It was work related. I quite liked the place, which suprised me.

So what he really meant was the internet is dead (useless for making the most profit) for artists (like himself) who don't need it.
