Actually in the past record labels used to hand out promos like candy and shit would leak months early. Now they just hand out clean versions cuz nobody wants the damn clean version. It causes more hype giving people many people a chance to peep the album and spread word.
Clean version Fat Joe's album leaked weeks ago and the explicit just in the last week. Same with snoop's new album.
If you ask me, it's always been a good idea. If the album is dope and worth buying, leak a clean version or a version with a tag. I've downloaded albums in the past where there's been a tag in every song about every 60 seconds saying "Property of blah blah, for promotion use only blah blah" The reason most labels don't want to do this is because 99% of the albums that come out anymore arn't worth buying, with one or two good songs and a bunch of fillers. The labels depend on suckering people into buying the albums.
