MTV Rates Makaveli as #9 on Greatest Hip Hop Albums!?!?

Honestly, I believe Ready to Die is one of the most overrated albums of all time.......Illmatic, 36 Chambers, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, are all better east coast albums as I see it.

as for Ready to Die being better than AEOM, this all depends on who u ask.....I wouldnt say Ready to Die is more celebrated among hip hop heads, if anything its probably 50/50. I prefer AEOM because the production is way better, more topics addressed, more types of songs, etc.....this is just my opinion of course, but ive heard both albums hundreds of times each.

This, however, is a fact: AEOM certainly was the more influential of the two albums. That is a fact. Pac's double cd may not be his best album, but its by far his most influential and it trancends all mainstream rap albums that came after it. Pac created so many formulas with that album that rappers today use, its ridiculuous.

This thread is full of shit.

Can't you just offer your opinion then just read. We don't need the same shit back and forth. If you offered something new it'd be cool. But no you don't.

I said my shit back on page 2 or 3. Now I just watch the dick riders rep each other and ignore technically greater albums.

What is so cool about Rakim...?This man has even not drop any classic solo albums and he hasn't done nothing for ages...
Every one of his albums is a damn solo album. It's not like N.W.A. or Wu-Tang, Eric B. is only a DJ. He doesn't rap. That's like saying All Eyez On Me isn't a solo album because of Johnny J.

Paid in Full is the best rap album ever. Every cut, every line, every track is classic. You all talk about how great the rappers from the early to mid 90s are, but who do you think created that style? Rakim. Paid in Full changed the game.

I remember before the board was hacked I said something that went over pretty well and enlgihtened some mebers on the board. We were talking about the greatest rapper ever, and people were pointing to the fact that everyone takes from Pac and gives it up for him. Well who do you think Pac took from and gave it up to? Rakim.

I know of at least three examples of where Pac gave it up to Rakim on wax:

1. "TLC, Eric B., Rakim, 'n' Scarface / Stretch, Mad K-Low, pumpin' the Squad's bass" - Representin' 93
2. "Eric B. & Rakim was the shit to me" - Old School
3. "Hey Nas, your whole damn style is bitten (You sound like Rakim, man)" - Against All Odds

Every album Rakim dropped was a classic, with the exception of maybe "The Master," which is still a damn good CD. And if it wasn't for Dre shitting on him, Rakim would have released on album just a little while ago. I expect to hear from him again.

My Top 10 Albums (I'm putteing them in alphabetical order by artist because I'd have to take to much time to think about a numerical order):

Me Against the World - 2Pac
Criminal Minded - Boogie Down Productions
The Chronic - Dr. Dre
Paid in Full - Eric B. & Rakim
The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory - Makaveli
Illmatic - Nas
Ready to Die - Notorious B.I.G.
Raising Hell - Run-D.M.C.
Doggystyle - Snoop Doggy Dogg
Enter the 36 Chambers - The Wu-Tang Clan

i ve been listening to Illmatic and wonder what people see in this album. Shit Nas doesnt even do a fuckin hook, he just says stuff over the it while other people do it or just letting the instrumental play. Im sure the verses made the album decent but overall i dont see it being one of the best albums.

I disagree on the rating of Makaveli and the exclusion of MATW like the rest of you, but I'm shocked at how many of you seem to senselessly hate on albums like Illmatic or Reasonable Doubt.

Those are still classics.

well when you break songs down into three parts - verses, hooks, and production - hooks are the least important. and just because he didn't do them doesn't mean they're not good. i love the hook on "One Love."

i know the hooks arent the most important but without decent hooks you dont got the full package. i ve listened to that whole cd today like 5 times and i just couldnt see why it was a classic. I know it was good album but i think it was missing shit.

Yea you just get a dude spitting dope rhymes. Ugh! Think about what fanbase hooks mostly appeal to. This shit is Hip-Hop, fuck a chorus.
And have you never heard a Premier hook before? Do you even know who he is?

What people see in Illmatic are DOPE lyrics and dope beats. If you can't see why people think the album is amazing that's really your problem, not the albums. Not trying to be an ass but that's just how it is.

Here's some dope lyrics:

The city never sleeps, full of villians and creeps
That's where I learned to do my hustle had to scuffle with freaks
I'ma addict for sneakers, twenties of buddah and bitches with beepers
In the streets I can greet ya, about blunts I teach ya
Inhale deep like the words of my breath
I never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death

What do you think of them?

yeah i know he has some dope veres but i dont know, your not gonna change my mind. fuck yeah i know who Premier is and u wonder why not many people know him. Maybe i just listened to that cd too much or something.

Like what? Dope beats? Album's got that.
What else do you beef with? Besides the hooks (which I've never heard anyone complain about and come on man this shit is Hip-Hop. How are you gonna say the album's not that great cuz you think it doesn't have decent hooks?).

Why are you so sure no one can change your mind? Is it that you don't WANT an album to be better than Pac's albums?

In my opinion i just think this album wasn't a classic and why did you bring Pac in this? this has nothing to do with his shit. and i never said the hooks sucked i just said he really wasnt involved in any of em. yes i actually liked the beats. im kinda busy right now so i cant really put alot of time in this but the bottom line for me is that when i listen to it, i dont think its a classic.

To tell ya the truth i bet half these people put illmatic in thier top ten list cuz the "heads" seem to always have it on their list or say its a classic.

ill discuss later i gotta go out for a bit.

Well, who's opinion is more trustworthy? Someone who's familiar with the ins and outs of hip-hop, or a 15 year old kid who can name everyone in G-Unit but has never heard of Rakim or Grandmaster Flash?

Not to say that you should just follow their opinions - you should make your own, but you shouldn't shield yourself from those opinions either. They may tell you something you didn't know before.

man.......illmatic is some of the dopest sh#t i've ever heard in my life.........to me it is the greatest hip hop album ever when you take PURE hip hop into consideration........pac is still the best though......he's more than a person i just listen to.....i HEAR pac....he's like my therapist....MATW is my fave album and then makaveli...........but in no way will i deny the brilliance of illmatic....just listening to nas lyrical ability on that album had me bugged....it hit me like a prophecy come true.......i think the general consensus should be that illmatic is the #1 hip hop album of all time because it showcases hip hop in it's purest form.....it should be the one album that represents hip hop.....not saying it's the best, but it perfectly reflects the culture

Doesn't the fact that these heads always have it in their list tell you something?
If I think an album is wack as fuck but people with a lot of knowledge of rap think it's a great album, I think "hey, maybe I'm missing something.". Then I'll go listen to the album again and again and see if I can appreciate it more. If I can't, I'll most likely stay away from calling it wack and just say I can't see why it's great.
Unless of course I know why they think it's a dope album and I don't agree with it. I'll call the shit wack then.

Absolutely.

That's the problem with a lot of these Pac fans. They should be critical of their opinion. They (like me) started to listen to rap because of Pac but they don't stray away from Pac. They just listen to Pac and people that he worked with. Eventually they might listen to some other rappers but mostly it's just Pac, Pac, Pac.
They don't get a proper view of rap music and just think "Pac is the best" without even knowing a lot of other artists or being able to rate other artists because they don't simply don't know how to. They put so much value in "realness" and emotion that they can't understand lyricism. Because Pac talked about "real" things they automatically think Biggie sucks because he just talked about "bitches, guns and women".
Most of them don't even know Rakim. And if they do it's just by name or one or two songs. They think Pac's Untouchable Freestyle is the best freestyle there is (Pac was a lot of things but he wasn't a good freestyler), they think Hit Em Up is the greatest diss etc. but they haven't even heard enough shit to judge. Anyway, enough ranting.
(Not saying that's you Sun_Tzu, just a general note)
