EARTHQUAKE HITS INDONESIA

An earthquake measuring 8.2 has hit Indonesia - 880 miles north west of the country's capital Jakarta.

The Pacific tsunami warning centre has issued a warning to authorities to evacuate coastlines within 600 miles of its epicentre.

The quake struck in the Andaman Sea off the coast of Sumatra about 1609 GMT, according to the US Geological Survey.

It was close to where a nine magnitude quake triggered a devastating Tsunami in Asia on Boxing Day which left about 300,000 people dead or missing.

USGS Spokesman Don Blakeman said: "Certainly evacuations should be occuring, I hope they are."

The tsunami warning centre has said the earthquake could cause a "widely destructive tsunami" and authorities should take "immediate action".

emissions from automobiles and other such sources release chlorofluorocarbons into the air, which are generally stable, which is why we thought that they wouldn't do any harm. but when they get higher in the atmosphere, the uv rays break them up, and the chlorine from the CFCs react with the ozone in the stratosphere, breaking it down into regular oxygen. this has created the hole (which is more of just a thinning) in the atmosphere, which lets more UV rays and has caused the skin cancer scares and stuff. the biggest problem, however, is the carbon dioxide thta is released, which traps heat from the sun. this warms the planet (one degree fahrenheit average over the past 100 years). that can cause shifts in the climate, whether it be big (such as the movie The Day After Tomorrow, which is surprisingly accurate in terms of the possibility of the current shifting) or small (such as a few more hurricanes or tornadoes). either way, a change in the temperature, however minute, can drastically affect the global sttability of the climate.

got some more news, the earthquake was not a vertical earthquake (where one plate moves up and down), it was a horizontal earthquake so the plates rubbed against each other, so the chances of a tsunami like in december is slim.
