purely because the great state of victoria, in australia, is being ravaged by a bush fire that is on an unprecedented scale.

35 people have died, about 40 are feared dead. Firefighters are battling conditions resembling the depths of hell; 46 degrees Celsius (that's nearly 120 Fahrenheit), dry, and some winds, making it nearly impossible to quell the blaze.

So, upon hearing all these sad stories - of people losing their houses, property, not to mention the memories that go with it; as well as the loss of lives, i have decided i'm going to enrol to be a volunteer firefighter, so that if such a devastating strike of nature occurs again, i will be there, on the front line, doing my best to put out the fire.

^nice.

My cousin did the same. Its very fun and a great thing to learn...not just for fire fighting but in general if there is ever a situation remotely close to it.

Isn't the system selective? You can't just show up at a fire station and be like "yo dawg, I want to put out fires and shit".

I mean...right?

I mean, it's not like when you join the Army and to motivate you, they say, "Hey, don't you want to go to interesting countries...meet interesting people...and have the opportunity to kill them?"

i thnk sofi is right. can you just volunteer your self?

its quite hard to get an application for a fire fighter, i mean i can be wrong, since the situation in oz is really bad. but good on you to step up and help volunteer.

i always wanted to be a fire fighter, since i was 15, its probably the easiest pick up line to use to get laid back in the day.

good luck with the help.

so far 173 people have died. it sucks that this number is sure too rise as these fires are still burning, and the temperature is predicted to be in the mid 30's (degrees) over the weekend and next week.

what gets me though is that most of these fires were deliberately lit.

To answer SOFI I'm sure they test your capability and state of mind etc, the things these volunteers have had to witness in Victoria is horrendous so I'm sure if your physically and psychologically fit they will train you.

Illmatic, respect for your ambition buddy it takes someone special to put themselves in harms way like that.

This shit in Victoria though is just crazy, some of the stories people have been telling are amazing and heart-breaking. I cant afford to give any money to the funds but I'm setting up an appointment to give blood. I hope the government helps rebuild these houses..

This is a picture taken, Koalas in the wild are usually very timid and will either flee from humans or attack them. This little one obviously too exhausted to do either:
