Want to live longer? Cut back on red meat - CNN.com

Want to live longer? Cut back on red meat

Burger lovers beware: People who eat red meat every day have a higher risk of dying over a 10-year period -- mostly because of cardiovascular disease or cancer --than their peers who eat less red or processed meat, according to a new study of about half a million people.

Fine. But let me comment on parts of this CNN article. "This is the biggest and highest quality study like this," says Barry M. Popkin, Ph.D., from the University of North Carolina, who wrote an editorial accompanying the study, which was published Monday in Archives of Internal Medicine. "They collected the diet data very carefully, and it's saying to people, 'You don't have to eat red meat every day.' "

Excuse me? It’s saying to people, “you don’t have to eat meat every day?” That's not what it’s saying to me. To me it's clearly saying, “you shouldn’t be eating meat ever."

The American Institute of Cancer Research recommends that people consume less than 18 ounces of red meat per week (the equivalent of a child-size fast-food hamburger per day) to reduce the risk for cancer…

Let’s see, the American Cancer Institute recommends less than 18 ounces per week. Do they also recommend less than, say, 10 cigarettes a day? How about recommending 0 ounces per week, political fuckheads? Somehow 17.9 ounces and less of carcinogenic shit per week has no effect on your risk for cancer. Where’s that study?

"It is important that people understand that they do not need to give up eating red meat, but should pay a little closer attention to how much they eat," says Lona Sandon, R.D., a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association and an assistant professor at UT Southwestern in Dallas, Texas.

“They do not need to give up eating red meat?” Of course they don’t need to. They don’t need to do a lot of things, like live longer, either. A spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association? They mean the American Neanderthal Nutrition Association. A shill for the meat and dairy industry. A cow knows more about nutrition than a dietician

"What we need to keep in mind about this study is that it does not prove that red meat causes increased death; it simply shows an association," she says.

Is this Sara Palin with a name change and a new career?

“What we need to keep in mind about this study is that it does not prove that playing Russian Roulette causes increased death; it simply shows an association,” she says.

Eating less meat could cut climate costs

Eating less meat could cut climate costs - environment - 10 February 2009 - New Scientist

Cutting back on beefburgers and bacon could wipe $20 trillion off the cost of fighting climate change. That's the dramatic conclusion of a study that totted up the economic costs of modern meat-heavy diets.

Millions of tonnes of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, would also be saved every year due to reduced emissions from farms.

These impacts would lessen the need for expensive carbon-saving technologies, such as "clean coal" power plants, and so save huge sums.

Ok, good study. By the way, there’s no such thing as “clean coal.” That’s a complete and total fraud. Obama is so wrong on this issue. I’m sure that he was merely misled. I’m sure with the best of intentions he thinks he’s doing the right thing, but once again, he’s being played by the supposed experts.

i dislike so called 'nutritionist scientists' and their jibba jabba, people should know their own body enough to know what to eat and whats good for them

That's because they overindulge.
Eating meat every now and then, few times a week and having little as 1 hour of working out a week will not make you overweight.

Everything in the USA is 'supersized' in some way or form, explains why people are disgusting there (not all obviously)
Excess of sugars, grease and more. People less and less have home cooked meals, also, a lack of physical education/activity doesn't help. Parents should force their kids to go out and enjoy themselves, play some sports or something... instead they have a video game for fitness now, The Wii Fit,

Being Obese is healthy.
for realz, you can survive longer being obese then being skinny if you get stranded in a desert.... :)2

Honestly, i eat a lot but can cut down if i wanted to. I am a skinny mofo though.

I am an American trying to gain weight. Before I go to sleep, on most nights I eat a peanut butter samich. But after a month of doing that, I only gained about 3lbs. The first time i did it, i gained 5 lbs. but that was a year ago and I lost it since then.

Anyway, mentioning Obama in a meat article is a bit weird, but i understand.

You shouldn't eat before going to sleep, esp not something high fat like peanut butter. It's bad for you and interferes with sleep. Unless you've been starving, the only way you should be trying to gain weight is to lift weights. You want muscle weight, not fat weight. Lift weights then eat a lot of meat for the protein.

personally speaking... i lost 90 lbs the 30 months i was locked up.. I went from eating fast food 2wice a day... no exercise.... soda with every meal or some other high sugar drink

to working out 2wice a day (at my peak) plenty of water (I prolly drunk 10 sodas the whole time i was gone) not eating at night anymore and if I did it was somthing very light such as peanuts... eatin a tuna after working out.. and basically a total turn around of daily activities

but since i been home.. im back to eating ground beef like crazy and I can feel the difference.. laziness is trying to pull me down.. I actually damn near feel like all the work I put in is over with :( but its not.. just gotta get that same mentality back

90!!!!

I lost 16 pounds during my exchange semester. I had a fitness room in my dorm so I went in there to do some cardio twice per week.

I was eating quality meat and quality veggies. The type that you have to throw away after 3 days if you didn't eat it... Unlike this unregulated bullcrap that we have in North America.

Thing with me is that I was 177 pounds, so I didn't have to do cardio, I could've went straight to the weights, as I didn't have any fat practically. I just became skinnier (not to the point where I looked like Flipmo fortunatly), but I was able to run a long time. Fun thing was, I was able to eat fast food and shit sometimes, as I was going to burn away the fat anyways.

Now, I just eat shit again. Luckly my mommy makes super great quality food, so I didn't gain that much weight. I went from 160-161lbs to 170 at the moment.

Pork isn't red meat. So Pork is okay? Most of the meat i eat is pork and not red anyway. I've been safe all along then, for all those veggie discussions we've had. In your face!

Shame the animals you kill don't have the right to that choice.
if someone came to you and pointed someone out in a street, and then pointed out a lamb, then said to you "one of them must die. which one do you choose to live?"

which one would you choose? the random dude/ girl walking, or the lamb munching on grass
