I feel like we all got back into 2pac recently. I was going through his OG songs just this weekend and had two thoughts:
1. It's sad how much amazing music has not been officially released. There are fans who died over the years without ever hearing some of his deepest verses if they only listened to his official material, which I'm assuming is most fans. In the hook for 'Reincarnation', he literally repeats "This composition be my prophecy I hope it's heard", and this really powerful song remains unreleased.
This is also true for songs that were amazing in their original form but their magic was completely absent in remixes. Nate Dogg's hook on Changed Man is immaculate. The vibes and the entire outro for the "Letter to my unborn child" are so emotional, yet the remix doesn't have that at all. I played that song to my girlfriend who isn't too familiar with 2pac's music and she got teary by the time the outro ended. Then I played the released version and she said "Why would they do this?". And it wasn't even a horrible remix.
It's just that the remixes feel like a product of their era - they clearly sound like 2000s or early 2010s rap or whenever they were released. Songs on Loyal to the game sound even more ridiculous now than they did when they released. Not only bad, but they are now also completely out of style and I'd question music tastes of anyone playing them in public (not like anyone does), no matter how much of a fan they were.
While many of the remixes aged poorly, the OGs often have a timeless feel to them, aside from sounding much more authentic.
2. I think I could objectively take his music in after a long break and it really, really struck me how much emotion he conveyed in his songs. How real and heartfelt his rapping sounds is something unmatched by any other artist I listened to since then. Over the years I don't think I've come across anyone with remotely close to the amount of charisma this guy had.
I'm over 30 now and I still can't pinpoint exactly what it was about Tupac that caused him to have that magic. I'm not familiar with any world leader today, let alone artist, who would have the same kind of presence. Everyone I come across either sounds fake when they are trying to be cool or likeable, and whiny when they are trying to be "real". I'm yet to meet or see anyone who'd have as much charisma as 2pac did and I still don't know what it was about him that nobody else seems to get right.
