Death Row East

Just wondering, why Pac was constantly talking about Death Row East, yet he didn't want the Outlawz to sign to Death Row under any circumstances. I get the feeling, (& others close to Pac have said it too), that Pac really wanted to leave DR, and just felt loyal to Suge to the point that he wanted to help DR out and establish a bigger base, before leaving to do his own thing.

I think Pac didn't want to burn any bridges w/Suge and company, and was trying to get out all along.


What do y'all think?

That's a good point that you bring up, about Pac trying to get everybody to join Death Row East yet not wanting the Outlawz to sign. I'm guessing that maybe he came up with the Death Row East idea when he was still really into Death Row since he had the idea during the first half of 1996 since it was mentioned in a couple interviews. But as he got tired of Death Row's bullshit, he probably didn't want the Outlawz to be tied into it, but he still kept the idea of Death Row East but without Suge's bullshit being involved in how it was run. But toward the end, Pac seemed more about getting people to sign with or at least record for Makaveli Records. But he was still supporting Death Row East when he was in New York for the MTV VMAs.

yeah, cause you would think, with all the cats coming out of New Jersey that Kadafi had connections with(Jerzey Mob), that Pac was gonna get them in the industry. But why would he coax them into signing w/Death Row East and then take only the Outlawz with him. So it could of been a tough situation, i think he would want the best for Kadafi's people, so wouldn't he sign them too? It seems Pac would have trouble convincing Suge that he's really trying to recruit the best artists for DR East. I think Pac would let the artists he didn't care about go to DR East, but convince those with the most talent to come w/him. All this would be going on while trying to convey to Suge that he's getting the best artists for DR East, which i think would eventually cause bad feelings between Pac and Death Row.

tupac didn't want the outlaws to sign to death row because he could offer them a better contract on makaveli records, probably. he wasn't singing jersey mob to death row east either. they were supposed to be on makaveli records as "ghetto stars". he did try to get some quality rappers on death row east though. well saying he did try is maybe not correct, but he mentioned a few they wanted on there in an interview.

If my knowledge of all this is correct, Death Row east was suppose to be a New Jersey takeover...and beyond. The Outlawz were originally from NJ, so i guess it would make sense for them to get signed to that. Pac not wanting to fuck the Outlawz over with a Death Row contract is most likely a sure thing. Towards the end, he knew Suge was fuckin him over with all the money he was SUPPOSE to be making. Death Row East was more of Suge's thing, under the influence of Pac - cause remember, 2pac was coming out with Makaveli Records that same year i think, and im sure as hell he wanted full control and responsibility of everything under that. Seems like he was SLOWLY backing out of Death Row in general and starting his own thing. Im not sure who he wanted on his label tho...he said that "Makaveli" was the 1st artist on that, and i think he mentioned that One Nation was gonna be all over that shit.

Pac even wanted Wu-Tang to join Death Row East. But in the later interview he talked about A LOT of East Coast artists being down with Makaveli Records.

cuz i've read before about him not bein to take his tapes, but also read in different places that it was Always like that at deathrow from the begining. and then pac so adament bout Death row east as late as we know as Sept. 4 and shit. and the whole 'untouchable death row' thing etc.

With his contract and everythin bein done once makaveli finished, and him wantin to leave like that it doesnt make much sense to me. he recorded hundreds of tracks while on deathrow that could easily been put out as albums early on. Hell he could of wrapped his 'contract of 3 albums' by early 96 cause death row had all the shit n the vaults. just like with crooked i i thinK? he could of left if he was wantin to after that. we all know he didnt record hundreds to get suge off his back (lol) So was it just the contract was realy more specified bout when the albums would be comin and shit? and when be put out? and even then, if pac had problems with that he would of said somethin or exposed somethin bout it or sumthin up. pac never seemed mad talkin about albums and shit with the makaveli he was gleamin bout how dope and back to the street it was etc. and he constantly recorded.

the whole shti aint never been rly explained i dont gues (?) at least i havent seen or heard it that well. just different blurbs bout it. And the shit bout suge owin pac all them millions etc but pac also owin deathrow millions (like he also said b4) so Wtf was up with that shit? it seems like it was crazy as fuk ?

With the lawz and everythin, i think pac knew they weren't ready yet to jump into shit like deathrow or any other big thing without proper guidence. they was stil just kids at the time

We can only speculate.


Pac wanted his own label. He wanted more control than Suge gave him. But I still believe Pac and DR would have been affilliated. DR would probably be in charge of distribution.

yeah, but he obviously was up to something as he started cutting ties w/important Death Row personnel and Suge's attorney (David Kenner), and trying to have audits performed to see how much DeathRow was shorting him. And telling the Outlawz not to sign, would have to be for negative reasons, so i don't think he would want anyone (even East Coast artists) in good faith to get caught up in Death Row's sheisty practices.

Yeah I agree Pac seemed like the type not to let someone walk down the same path as him if it was bad for them, it is odd that so close to his death he was still representing Death Row that hard since all the money he was gettin robbed of. I can only think he either didnt know or wanted to keep that front on because of the beef with Biggie, he didnt want the Westside to seem weak.

I think that tupac was slippin away from deathrow and he knew that suge would be pissed if he said anything so he had some one try to pick up all his tapes (i forget who did it) but kenner said no but tupacs contract was up so then kenner told suge and suge knew (thought) he would have all his tapes and that would boost the sales/money for deathrow so thats why suge started calling deathrow "new and untouchable" but pac never was told. also pac i think was representing deathrow because like what artisticgurl said he had to keep strong so he could still be on top of the east and keep suge happy. I think afeni knew that pac was being screwed so she filed the law suit and won.

I heard that rumor a while back. When was Death Row trying to get at him? If he were to be the FIRST rapper on the label, then they must've been talking to him since early 1996 because Pac never mentioned anything about it but he talked about wanting to sign Wu-Tang. But if that were true, then it would be kind of a bitch move for DMX to drop that freestyle dissing Pac and the West Coast.
