Boredom!

#1
i find it very difficult to relax while at work. i hate being bored at work with nothing or very little to do.

i am more relaxed at work when my mind is occupied with thinking about having lots of jobs to do and planning them, 'multi-tasking' is a must in my job especially when its busy, and thats what i like about being a chef.

i am naturally restless as a person and cant stand not being occupied. i have to be constantly moving, doing something, doing one job while thinking about the next job that needs doing. but recently staff hours have been cut back. having four chefs in the kitchen when there is only 5 people booked in the restaurant. like i said i cant relax at work especially when there is no motivation, and seriously felt like i was going to suffer a heart attack today just from the boredom and lack of motivation. instead of feeling motivated i started to feel sick instead. its not good for me or the high metabolism that i have, plus having a week off work recently its been hard to get back into the routine of work. being bored makes me feel sick, how do you deal with boredom

It's not a disorder - it's a characteristic.

When I'm bored at work, I let my OCD kick in and start cleaning every inch of the kitchen. I change the grimy hood filters, I get on my hands and knees and clean under the fryer. I scrub the walls with a mild bleach solution. I wipe the windows (but leave the spiders webs - it's an organic insect trap). I then check all the plates for chips and cracks. I take inventory. I change light bulbs. I disinfect microwaves and the fridge. I then sharpen my knife ('cause it's really therapeutic). And then I go pick up the cigaret butts in the parking lot. I drink some miso soup and think of a new recipe but I get bored with that so I go flirt with the hottest waitress who also happens to be the boss man's daughter - chea chea.

There must be something you can do to avoid cardiac arrest.

I'm just like you. You answered your own questions. You need to always have multiple things to think about, otherwise your brain is not stimulated and you get bored. The way to deal with that is to always stack up things to do.

I'm the same, actually. My mind is only stimulated when I'm doing something that requires my full attention. Because only when I fully dedicate myself to something am I able to let go of my own thoughts and actually relax. There needs to be so much going on that I have no left-over time or mental energy to be thinking about anything. That's when I'm the happiest.

Things that provide a similar pleasure is when I watch something I really enjoy watching while eating really good food. On thursday evenings I download Lost and eat a Pizza. For those 40 minutes, I don't know where I'm at, but I zone out and feel very comfortable. It's only when I catch myself having zoned out that I realize what a great time I was having.

I don't think there's a cure. I have to believe the reason I'm like this is due to the way glands in my body release secretions into my blood or something. Being as such it's not like a social anxiety where if you face your fears you overcome the problem. The only thing you can do is to try and find something simple that you can always do. Keep a Rubicks cube or a similar stress toy with you. When you get bored pre-occupy your hands. Consciously it doesn't make a difference, but it pre-occupies your subconscious. Think of it as a way to fool your brain into think it's already preoccupied.
