i wouldnt say this is a new low for religion because its the act of one psychopath.

however, a report on child sex abuse, released here the day before yesterday, could be described as a new low for religion or for Catholicism at least.

Atheism is not a belief. It is a lack of a belief. Nobody makes personal choices or actions through a lack of a belief.
"I don't believe in any gods."
"I believe there are no gods."

I'd say most atheists who can't stfu about how religion sucks have an affirmative belief in the non-existence of any deity.

I also believe this bowl in front of me has no cereal left in it. Therefore I will not take the action of picking up the spoon and inserting it into my mouth.

At the same time Casey someone who believes they need to kill a 4 year old because of how they interpreted something (and the fact they are fucking crazy) isn't exactly in line with a common belief of Religion. There is a common thread of bigotry, but you can't really group them together.

Well, Christian Scientists (or was it Nuclear) and some Jehovah Witnesses will let their children die because they don't believe in blood transfusions. Others will throw acid at girls and mutilate them and stone them for their interpretation of their religion. Pretty common in that part of the world.

Psalm 137: Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.

There is alot of fucked up shit in the Old Testament. And unfortunately because the Bible is up to interpretation some people come to believe these kinds of things. In the cases that you mentioned then I would consider that a low for religion, those are wide spread common beliefs. How many people were in this man's circle? His wives? Was that it? Don't get me wrong, it's fucked up, and I'm not Religious but I don't think it's right to mark this one solely on Religion.

Unfortunately sex abuse and Catholicism go hand in hand, or at least scrotum to mouth.

It's been an issue for centuries with neither side providing concrete evidence for it's theory on the beginning of life.
But there is concrete proof of dinosaurs, and the age of the earth. Both which contradict the stories in Holy books.

Also, a theory based on scientific fact is more appealing to me, than one based on stories. I think common sense tells us that as we as homo sapiens become older as a species we make further discoveries and break throughs. We don't keep using the same inventions from 2000 years ago. We improve them and increase our knowledge. Why would religion be any different? We have outgrown religion, there is no evidence that magic exists, and all people base their faith on are old texts. The whole concept of it is flawed. If it was the word of God, surely it'd be perfect.
