I think the USA do it the right way. You get a more rounded education than in the UK. Although the UK schools system is pants. The vocabulary and grammar in the USA is far superior.
In reply to Casey. Supermarkets aren't going to employ a graduate and waste money training him up, for him to leave as soon as a better offer comes along. Over qualified people aren't hired because it's a waste of everyone's time. If I was a manager at a supermarket I would hire a person who is capable of doing the job, but not so good that they will leave after a couple of months. After all... How difficult is it to stack shelves or scan goods.
