as promised when i tried to get my blackberry phone. i had went to 4 different verizon stores. all of the salesman behind the counter were ready to sell me one, they ask for my I.D. they run my name on their computer next thing you know they all tell me *were sorry you were denied a phone because of an idenity theft from 2006*.

i did have my ID stolen there was a computer hacker who stoled 300,000 ohioian's personal files. my dads ID was stolen.. they had said on the news that a young kid in his mid 20's had stolen files down in Columbus. not sure if they ever caught the guy.

so i was just in shock, i had told the people that i applied for a target card back in 2007 and was denied at the time because of the ID theft, however i called the target headquarters to talk to someone and she had heard about the ohio ID theft's. i told her that i was signed up to Debix and Equifax's those are companies that protect you from ID theft. once i explained that to them they went an proccessed my app and i got approved for a card. SO I KNOW that it hasnt screwed up my credit. i pay my bills and car payment on time.

now for the longest time i lived in the dark ages i didnt have a cell phone. i had bought one in NOV of 2007. i got a poor mans phone called Revol.. no contract, unlimited calls and text's. with Revol you can have a criminal record and a bad credit history and still be approved for a phone. i know that Verizon and the other big cell phone companies they look into your history. as i went thru the hassle on the 24th.

my question to all of you is how do i go about handling this?? call verizon? call debix and equifax??? get a hold of the ohio better business bureau?? an attorney?? what. i cant understand why something that happened 3 years ago is still on my record. i do wanna clear this problem up so i can upgrade and get a new phone.

i appreciate the feed back

Did they really say "identity theft from 06?"

If that is the case... then I think you call the phone company.

I had a friend who had bad credit, he fixed his credit through one credit bureau and they still denied him. I guess one of the 3 still had a bad report. You can try checking all 3.

But I never dealt with this b4...So i am not really sure. :(

yeah they knew of the person who stoled them, of the 300,000 files 5,000 people from toledo had their ID's stolen.

surprised that Keco hasnt responded to this, i wonder if she remembers hearing this on the news.

That's ridiculous. Why are you supposed to suffer this kind of backlash from a crime someone else committed?

It's a like a bank not loaning you money cos you got mugged.

Do "they" hold it against you that you were victim of an ID theft? Surely, since this was such a big deal, how can this not be cleared up?

^the system is fucked.

Someone did the same thing 2 my bro, but instead, someone went to jail claiming to be him.

Then when he got promoted, they did a random background check and he got fired. A month later, they re-hired him after the mix up, but he has not yet cleared his history with it. It has been 5 years.

Are you sure someone stole your identity or do you just place a freeze on your accounts?

Get copies of your credit reports and start disputing anything that you think is a result of the identity theft (wrong name or address). Your credit report should explain a lot.

You can try to get a new social security card but that could create new problems.
