or aiff... yes to both formats.
when you compress a wave or aiff file, even if the codec is "lossless" you lose something. just like matter can't be created or destroyed, nor can quality. you can't shrink a 50mb file to 10mb without loss. the catch is whether the loss is audible or not. aac and other new formats to the block claim to do a better job than mp3, but nothing will rival the purity of an uncompressed cd rip.
well u can

not 50 - 10, but a third is resonable

ill explian later if any1's bothered.

Compared with image compression, lossless compression algorithms are not nearly as widely used in audio compression. This is changing with the popularity of lossless formats such as FLAC, as people increasingly want to maintain a permanent archive of their audio files. The primary users of lossless compression are audio engineers, audiophiles and those consumers who want to preserve the full quality of their audio files and who disdain the quality loss from lossy compression techniques such as Vorbis and MP3.

First, the vast majority of sound recordings are natural sounds, recorded from the real world, and such data doesn't compress well. In a similar manner, photos compress less efficiently with lossless methods than computer-generated images do. But worse, even computer generated sounds can contain very complicated waveforms that present a challenge to many compression algorithms. This is due to the nature of audio waveforms, which are generally difficult to simplify without a (necessarily lossy) conversion to frequency information, as performed by the human ear.

The second reason is that values of audio samples change very quickly, so generic data compression algorithms don't work well for audio, and strings of consecutive bytes don't generally appear very often. However, convolution with the filter [-1 1] (that is, taking the first difference) tends to slightly whiten (decorrelate, make flat) the spectrum, thereby allowing traditional lossless compression at the encoder to do its job; integration at the decoder restores the original signal. More advanced codecs such as Shorten, FLAC and TTA use linear prediction to estimate the spectrum of the signal. At the encoder, the estimator's inverse is used to whiten the signal by removing spectral peaks while the estimator is used to reconstruct the original signal at the decoder.

i'll still stick by my guns here. if you compress a spring without care (mp3), it will never re-spring to its original shape. if you do so with care (flac) and precision, the spring will appear closer to its original shape than the former method, but it will never be as good as a new spring. granted, flac and other newer codecs are much better (mp3 was popularized mid-90's so it's relatively old technology), but compression by its very nature alters the original audio source. smart filtering of inaudible frequencies helps cut size, but when the waveform is complex as the aritlce states, you do ultimately lose some audible data to achieve smaller filesize. in an ideal compressor, the achieved filesize would really only be 5mb less than the original 50mb, and that's assuming filters were not included in the mastering process. there's still a long way to go, but with mp3's being the favored medium (ipods, mp3 dvd-r, etc) i'd expect mp3 to stick around for a long time, even despite that it may be second or third best.

thatd be nice if a wave file was a spring.

its a string of binary words, in which the next value can, (with appropriate filters beforehand), be predicted to some extent, and traditional compression methods to be used. Any file CAN be compressed losslessly, just sound isnt exactly perfect for it, hence the less than impressive compression rates.

what you gonna study? get a degree and come to norway and work here. i work 3 hours every other night as well as 5 hours every other saturday and 4 hours every sunday and i make about $1,100-1,200 a month. if you were, say, a doctor, you'd probably make anything from $130,000-350,000 a year. you could go back to kazahkstan and damn near buy the whole country heh.
I’m studying economics. Lol, I would like to come to Norway or similar country, but everything is not so easy.

About buying Whole County, I know you have been sarcastic. But I build a wrong view of my country for all your.
Yes average people don’t live so good like Europeans but we live pretty well for our measures. Kazakhstan nowadays looks like Las Vegas; you can see casinos on every corner, we have very rich people: politics, oil’s bosses, police bosses etc.

That’s the problem we have average the next is very rich. You can see Bentley’s, Lamborghinis, and Escalades. Money is circulating here. But it’s very hard and impossible for the most part to enter those circles.

I will give you an example: My father 52years old. He is wrestling coach. Well known and respected in my country.
He trains world athletes, last Olympics Games his sportsmen took silver. And what do you think his official salary 200$!!!

It’s nothing! He makes money by selling some shit like T-shirts, uniform etc.

There is a lot to say about Kazakhstan, but I think it’s not the right thread::D

2 u i can see why u think its worth less. SOme ppl have 2 play the cards they were delt. Dante has established him self so he has the freedon and luxury to spend a lil cash on something he enjoys . Like most students like your self cant spare too much cash but ur sayin "why u collecting its so dumb ect"... well a lot of things can be considered "dumb " then, but in ur situation I dont blame u for thinking that. Maybe when ur done w/ school and have a good job 4 all ur hard work u might see it in a diff light.Even 2pac started on the bottom.
I had never said that it is dumb. I just said it was worthless. But I see peoples points. It's a hobby, something you are enjoying, that makes you feel good, keeping from the stress. If you got money, why not-like I said.

Don't get it twisted:)
