Film & TV Robert Downey Jr. to play Iron Man.

#1
Over the years, Robert Downey Jr. has played students, junkies, cops, sleazy producers, rogue U.S. Marshals and, um, Charlie Chaplin. And none of those roles seemed to be as much of a stretch as the one he's just signed on for billionaire-industrialist-turned-mecha-hero Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Downey will play Stark in the big-screen version of Marvel Comics' "Iron Man," to be directed by Jon Favreau. Shooting is scheduled to get underway this February in Los Angeles, with a reported budget of more than $100 million.

In the film, Stark — who, in addition to being a billionaire is also a master inventor (aren't they all) — is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, he develops a high-tech suit of armor, which helps him escape his captors and uncover a nefarious plot with global implications.

Stark first donned the Iron Man armor way back in 1963, making his first appearance in Marvel's "Tales of Suspense" anthology series. In his original incarnation, Stark was an M.I.T. graduate who traveled to Vietnam to help the American war effort with his inventions. Ultimately, he's wounded by a piece of shrapnel and taken into custody by the Viet Cong, where he's put to work developing weapons for the enemy. But with the help of a fellow prisoner, he develops a powerful metal exoskeleton in secret, and uses it to escape.

The movie version of "Iron Man" — which has been in various stages of development for years — will take place in the current geo-political climate, according to the Reporter. It's tentatively scheduled to blast into theaters May 2, 2008.

Man, I didn't think there'd be a worse comic movie casting job than the one-two punch of Sir Ian McKellen (Magneto) and Anna Pacquin (Rogue) for the X-Men movies, but.....here we are.

Actually, how many GOOD comic movie casting jobs have there been lately? Tobey MacGuire as Spidey, Ben Affleck as Daredevil (and Jen Garner as Elektra), Nic Cage as Ghost Rider, seems like the Sin City movie's the only time it's been done right since Snipes was cast as Blade.

McKellen is a great Magneto.

i must disagree with you for the x-men movies, the cast is actually great. i dont know how oyu can complain about that cast, they did the job very well.

as for daredevil, ghost rider and those other comics movies, not great at all. tobey mcguire tho aint too bad as a spiderman.

I agree w/ Prof. X, but the fact is, I wanted a stronger presence for Magneto, I can't get over the fact that Sir Ian just looks old & frail in every scene I've seen him in as Magneto (I haven't seen the 3rd movie yet).

Just sometimes, the casting is perfect, and you can't imagine someone else playing this character, like Sin City (pretty much the whole cast), Snipes as Blade, Brandon Lee as the first Crow, Ron Perlman as Hellboy, especially come to mind.

I actually have a new one that pisses me off more than anything, whoever the hell it was that played Dr. Doom in the new (kinda) FF movie. In fact, the Doom character itself was bullshit in that movie.

The casting for the X-Men films has been mostly perfect. FF's was horrible, Ben Affleck as Daredevil, oh man.. But I thought Batman Begins nailed it too.

Nick Cage is going to be perfect for Ghost Rider. Especially since he's a fanatic of the original comic book. He knows the role and how to play it.

Mark my words, Nick Cage will rock as Ghost Rider.

As for the Cokehead playing Ironman... Could be either horrid.. or impressive. Downey has played some great roles before.
