The Review (221's Thoughts)
1. Intro (4/5)
You guys have heard this already, nice opening intro to set the mood for the album. Although Noble sounds a bit dopey saying 'deathrow days man, they was some good days man' the beat along with the interview snippet from Pac save it, and as I say sets the album ready to be heard for the world.
2. Komatose (3/5)
Never was a fan of this song but finally hearing it in CDQ beat enabled me to appreciate the song more and of course appreciate the verses. Napolean no doubt steals the show on this one, his opening verse is the best on this song although the long lost outlaw storm comes through for the females with a banging verse. I didnt appreciate the recycling of lyrics from EDI but there we go they certaintly 'deadly when they live and deadly when they rise'.
3. Thug Nation (3/5)
Another track ya'll likely have heard already. This particular track I am not really feeling. I feel the beat is missing something right now it sounds boring and needs that extra instrument in the beat to do it justice (maybe a drum or guiter). EDI has a dope verse as does Napolean but would they really 'die for their thug nation'?
4. Soulja's Story Part 2 (2/5)
To live up to a 2pac song is one thing but to live up to 'Souljas Story' is something else. The outlawz dont cut it on this track and in my opinion slightly taint the song title 'Souljas story'. Yeah its meant to be part 2 but they are trying too hard, its down to Pac (as usual) to save the track with a recycled soulja verse from 'souljas story'. Disapointing.
5. What Goes Around, Comes Around (4/5)
Album picks up again with thiis track and from here is where the album starts to shine. 'What goes around, comes around' is something we drastically miss from outlaw verses. The question that comes to mind is 'what if the outlawz still rapped like this these days'? One can only think of how good theirs and pacs albums would be if they stuck to the rules. This is an album hightlight, fa sure.
6. Retribution (Feat. Val Young) (4/5)
Album title track. Retribution and to me Val Young makes this song with her singing and 'moaning' (if you can call it that) on the track. Nice beat and again with excellent outlaw verses, particulary from EDI (wtf happened to him lol). 'Talk about retribution' is reminisent and sounding of a bob marley line 'talk about reveloution'. As with track 5 this is another album hightlight.
7. Still Mournin' (5/5)
As with many of the outlaw songs, this is another we have heard and I will 'still' likely bump this when 'mournin' Makaveli rather then 'Mr.Makaveli'. Ya'll know the lyrics ya'll know the beat no need to say any more.
8. Bless My Soul (Feat. Prince Ital Joe & Bad Azz) (5/5)
'WOW' sums this song up the only thing I can do is ask why the outlawz dont do shit like this anymore, this certaintly deserves the 5 out of 5 and when you guys hear it you will know why. The beat and even edi on certain parts 'singing' 'la la la la laalalaa la la la lalalaa' blew me away. This has that 'WOW factor' ya'll be wanting from tha outlawz and even Pac songs. They need to put a Pac verse over this! Sort of made me feel like a sneaky outlaw version of a dont go to sleep type feel. YOU WILL LOVE THIS
9. Novakane (5/5)
Another 5/5 track from the album. Yeah ya'll heard it but you heard it shittie lol. When you hear this in CDQ you will relize just how fucking tight the beat is along with those lil enhancements in the beat you can only hear on a CDQ. Simply Amazing.
10. Under Pressure Part 2 (5/5)
The beat really makes this track, as I have mentioned its not until you hear them in CDQ you really get to appreciate this. Wish the verses were a lil more there and had that 'punch' that beat is screaming out for, on the whole its still dope. Storms verse seems a little out of place for me and doesnt really suit the beat. It is what it is and its still a 5/5 track!
11. Pass The Heat (Feat. Wack Duece)
Another we have heard previously. Always hated this one and always will I just think its noble on that beat lol. For that one I wont rate it and I'll leave it up to the listener to decide.
12. Angel (3/5)
Another dope beat but its missing something and its that something missing thats making me not like it. On saying that, this song will have its fans and no doubt be labelled by most Pac/outlaw fans as 1 of the highlights of the album...
13. Hold On (3/5)
Average song, I think this song the outlawz are trying to match/beat Tupac lyrically and beat wise, they dont achieve it. I can imagine Pac rapping over this much better. The hook I am not really feeling. Only thing that saves the song from getting a 2 rating is EDIs verse and the beat.
14. Stay Awake (5/5)
"Young niggaz did you prey today, my young niggaz did you prey today, come on, open your eyes nigga stay awake, climbing closer to the pearly gates' - Need I say more?
15. Family Pictures (2/5)
Wasnt feeling this. I felt the beat didnt suit the verses at all especially EDIs. I am pretty sure Ive heard EDI recycle these lyrics before 'At times I look at time with such anger, wondering why it keeps on passing bringing me closer to danger........'. The beat sounds like something TQ would sing over and it dont get any better when the poorly sung hook comes on. Lets hope Pacs version of this song is much better.
16. In God's Eyes (2/5)
2 bad tracks in a row. This is disapointing I was expecting something hard and something would rap along the lines of 'in gods eyes'. None of the outlawz on this track can save it. The hook is corny too.
17. The Hunger (Feat. Wack Duece) (3/5)
Another one I am not feeling. I wish they wouldnt have these singers on the hooks they kind of spoil the tracks and how bad must it be for me to say Young Noble has the best verse on this song? lol come on now. The beat is O.K. its just that annoying hook. Would be alot better without it
18. Mr. Makaveli (5/5)
I had high expectations for this track, and it delevered. Who made the track? Nope not noble nut thats right the old combination of Kadafi and Fatal!
Fatal did his verse justice and his hook is dope you can certaintly hear he means it when he says 'Their aint shit I wouldnt do for Mr.Makaveli'. Napolean came through too. This was the outlawz in their prime and not to be missed.
Fatal sums up everyones feelings with his closing line in the songs last verse - 'My chest hurts since Pac died cali got colder, snake strike like cobras, and police is all over, they can get some of this in the hummer off roader you aint going down nigga with the rest of the crew, now what the fuck the whole world gonna expect us to do, with out you'
This is a plea to Amaru and Tha outlawz - Bring back FATAL you guys really need him.
19. Outro (3/5)
Noble talking 'blah blah blah keeping us in the game without ya'll we aint shit'. then goes into a lil skit with the outlawz, nice way to end it.
Overall
You are a fool to not pick this up. At 20 bucks you cant go wrong, you are missing out on what the outlawz are really about and what 2pac trained. Tupacs teaching and lessons to tha outlawz shine through on most songs and the shit tha outlawz did on their own shows, you will see.
Bless my soul and Novakane steal the show along with Mr.Makaveli (nice name btw ). These are perfect examples of what the outlawz could have been if Pac was still around.
Overall this album scores a 8.5 out of 10. Def a highlight of 2006 and will keep you interested until the Pac album drops
