I live inside a black hoe.
But we actually do live inside a black hole. The Universe itself is a black hole. A black hole so big that it contains billions of other black holes inside itself. The idea of the Universe as a black hole is not new. It's been bouncing around since the early 70s. Scarcely anybody took the notion seriously, because nobody then realized that the Universe is dominated gravitationally by dark matter. But today, scarcely anybody doubts this picture. And if all the complexity of galaxies, stars, planets and organic life emerged from the singularity in which our Universe was born, within a black hole, could not something similar be happening to the singularities at the hearts of other black holes?
So from the idea that our Universe is a black hole with smaller black holes in it, it's not much of a leap to posit that our black-hole Universe could be contained within an even larger Universe/black hole. All this guy is doing is presenting some new mathematical modeling of this idea, and the press thought it would make a cool story and that some folks not familiar with all these speculations would be wowed. But he's just one of many theoretical physicists working on just as interesting variations of this theme.
