Well you're assuming a lot of things. The only facts we know is that there was a bottle of liquor in his car. If he was caught drunk driving screaming "Fuck you mommy and daddy, I'm doing what I want!!!" I'd agree. Drinking at the age of 19 doesn't seem rebellious to me. I started smoking weed at 15 and it didn't have anything to do with rebelling or thinking it was "cool". I also don't need it to have fun but I do have fun doing it. You don't need a TV or computer either. (Of course those things aren't bad for your health but it's up to the person to accept the risks).
I don't think it's even a little stupid, it doesn't make sense. The law deems an 18 year old mature enough to own a gun, which was designed to kill, but not to drink a beer, which might possibly lead to the person drinking too much and getting in the car. If they upped the gun age to 21, driving to 18 then I wouldn't have a problem with it. 21 is a good age because it decreases the chances of idiots fucking up but if a 19 year old is mature enough to drink responsibly then there shouldn't be a problem. Considering the way his mother (over)reacted I can understand why he hid it so the fact that he hid it doesn't necessarily say anything about his maturity.
