Darkness Affecting Mood

We all know that it's much better to watch a movie at night, especially scary ones.

I read a small article online about a study done in massachusetts that if you don't have natural light for a while, it actually affects your mood.

depression, hostility, anger, irritability and anxiety were highest in the winter and lowest in the summer. "Light exposure, diet and exercise, which all tend to vary with the seasons, may partially explain such mood differences,"
I tend to see that most people work out during winter to get their body's in shape for summer, so I don't think that specific excuse works.

Do you believe it has any affect on your mood personally?

I believe it does. I'm not as active or lively when it's dark (knowing it's supposed to be light) and it affects me in some way I can't seem to explain.

The weather moreso than the time of day. I feel happier in a thunderstorm than I do on a bright sunny day. As I think about it, the background noise is what makes it. That there's stuff going on outside your house and the world is carrying on.

For some reason, people playing in a park on a sunny day just doesn't cut it.

Definately. I get depressed when the weather is grey.

I remember when I was 5 years old and I first started school. On a grey day I'd sit there doing nothing. I felt unable to work.

I'm guessing by exercise they mean beyond the gym. More people are up-and-about during the warmer seasons. More people will swim, take the bike etc.

I thought sunlight affecting your mood had been well-established. That's why Scandinavia's suicide rate exceeds their population-growth rate. They'll be extinct soon :(

Seasonal Affective Disorder. Im really interested in that, especially where people get cravings for carbohydrates.

i feel more gloomy when the weather is dull, grey, wet or damp. however i do feel slightly better when its snowing and the roads are icy because i like the winter/christmas-y feel.

but im at my best, in terms of mood, feeling, emotions, diet etc when its hot and sunny. i just wish we had more of it around here. [expects wood and tha_stred to comment on this].

That's because your fat ass gets depressed over the sunny weather because you can't play in the park with your friends and you're probably insecure as hell taking your shirt off.

tbh i dont mind winter much at all apart from the heavy rain we tend to get here especially around November-early December.

but i love those days where its cold and dry.

i much prefer it to the mild damp weather we got here over the last 2 months or so.

Nothing much better than a cold, dry day without wind. That's honest weather. A man's weather.

I quite like the rain. Especially at night. Sometimes I open the window when I am in bed so I can hear it better.

I don't think it has an affect on mood, I know it does. Don't believe me? go up to northern canada for a year.

Weather doesn't really affect me. I feel like I can find something enjoyable to do regardless of it. Like some people hate the winter, I like to snowboard so i'm all for it. Some people don't like heat, I'm Hawaiian and that shit is in my blood, I love it. Some people don't like rain, and those people are weird.

Above the polar circle where I live, we have light all summer, and darkness all winter. Yeah, it has a huge impact on mood. The older I get, the more difficult it gets to deal with imo. I don't know what it is about sunlight but I can look out of the window, and if it's good weather outside, it just makes me happy for no apparent reason. I don't think the darkness depresses you, I think the lack of that positive feeling several times a day whenever you look at the sun and think "Gee, this is a beautiful day" makes all the things you normally have to deal with a bit more daunting, which in turn gives the impression that you are feeling more depressed, and it seems to have to do with the darkness.

I don't have to "get over these feelings", I'm like a rock :p

And for the record, I have no opinion about whale catching but it does look bloody naughty on the telly
