I actually have a doll collection at home. It's pretty legit; I started collecting them when I was in junior high. We were living out in Brooklyn in some dingy apartment, and after school my next door neighbor would watch after me when Mom was working. She was a sweet old lady, a sweet lonely lady. All she had was her cats, an apartment full of cats, and dolls! Incredible vintage dolls. Later, after she died, I came to find out that she had her design and hand on every one of those girls. She sowed the dresses, did the tailoring on their clothes, she placed every strand of hair carefully on their heads, the touch of blush on the cheeks, the shoes on their feet, everything. I believe she had presented one of them to me for a birthday, and I fell in love with it! It had started there, and over the years, I would look for them, some would fall in my lap. They are not so easy to find around. Recently I was shopping at a Japanese marketplace, and I went into a little shop there. Behind a glass window was this beautiful doll-figure, wearing a traditional Kimono dress and now I collect Japanese folk art dolls, they are just as wonderful.
