Cannabis smoke 'has more toxins'
Inhaled cannabis smoke has more harmful toxins than tobacco, scientists have discovered.

The Canadian government research found 20 times as much ammonia, a chemical linked to cancer, New Scientist said.

The Health Canada team also found five times as much hydrogen cyanide and nitrogen oxides, which are linked to heart and lung damage respectively.

But tobacco smoke contained more of a toxin linked to infertility. Experts said users must be aware of the risks.

About a quarter of the population in the UK smokes tobacco products, while a sixth of 15 to 34-year-olds have tried cannabis in the past year, making it the most commonly used drug.

The confirmation of the presence of known carcinogens and other chemicals implicated is important information for public health
David Moir, lead researcher

Previous research has shown cannabis smoke is more harmful to lungs than tobacco as it is inhaled more deeply and held in the lungs for a longer period.

However, it has also been acknowledged that the average tobacco user smokes more than a cannabis user.

Researchers from Health Canada, the government's health research department, used a smoking machine to analyse the composition of the inhaled smoke for nearly 20 harmful chemicals.

They also looked at the sidestream smoke, given off from the burning tip of the product and responsible for 85% of the smoked inhaled through passive smoking.

Concentrations

In most cases, the comparison on sidestream smoke broadly mirrored that of inhaled smoke.

However, in the case of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the toxin linked to infertility, the researchers found concentrations were actually higher in cigarette smoke.

The study also showed little difference in the concentrations of a range of chemicals, including chromium, nickel, arsenic and selenium.

Lead researcher David Moir said: "The consumption of marijuana through smoking remains a reality and among the young seems to be increasing.

"The confirmation of the presence of known carcinogens and other chemical is important information for public health."

Dr Richard Russell, a specialist at the Windsor Chest Clinic, said: "The health impact of cannabis is often over-looked amid the legal debate.

"Evidence shows it is multiplied when it is cannabis compared to tobacco. "Tobacco from manufacturers has been enhanced and cleaned whereas cannabis is relatively unprocessed and therefore is a much dirtier product.

"These findings do not surprise me. The toxins from cannabis smoke cause lung inflammation, lung damage and cancer."

Stephen Spiro, of the British Lung Foundation, added the findings were "a great worry".

propaganda? maybe.

It's not propaganda, it's true.

The smoke is thicker and does more damage overall, aside from the part they mentioned about holding the smoke in longer.

Of course it's all relative, like the article says, generally people that smoke cigarettes smoke more tobacco than people who smoke bud.

But as a side-by-side comparison, smoke 30 cigarettes in a day, and the next day smoke 30 spliffs in a day (and generally use the same amount of weed in each spliff as a cigarette contains tobacco) and then see if your lungs hurt more.

Pound for pound, yes cannabis smoke has more toxins.

is it true that noone has ever died from smoking cannabis?
Untrue. But you can't really prove it because the studies aren't there in the same way they are for cigarettes, where people have basically been studied their entire lives for people to recognise the impact of smoking.

Smoking bud is no different in terms of causing lung cancer, throat cancer, heart disease etc. It's not what's being smoked that causes those things so much as the actual act of burning something and inhaling.

And therefore the article is bs. At least the admit that you can't compare tabocco and bud in terms of amount that people smoke. But if so, what is the point of the article...

Besidest that, what is bud? What was the kind substance that did compare to tabbacco? Could be worse than the weed I smoke, could be better than what I got right here. So, I feel like it just ain't that easy to say weed is worse than whatever. To know what this study is worth I'd need way more informations.

It is bullshit, the toxins that they mention are added in tobacco to increase product life. Those toxin are not naturally in the plants, tobacco or cannabis.

cannabis is the plant from which you make weed, hash, keef, etc. there are so many different kinds of cannabis plants though, which is why you get all the different types. the thai weed you mentioned, that's basically keef (i think?). i'm not sure. it sounded sorta nice though.

That's bullshit. All those chemicals are added to ciggs. A ton different ones actually. How does something from the earth or soil get chemicals added to it? It doesn't. Propaganda at it's finest.

well there are 2 points to be made here. first off, tobacco is as natural and as much from the earth and soil as marijuana is, so if toxins can be added to tobacco, why not weed? second, with all the chemaical fertilizers and everything like that used these days to grow weed, you really have no idea what's in your weed. just because it's "natural" does not make it safe, especially not these days.

but as has already been stated, there are so many different strains of weed, all with different potency, growing techniques, etc. that a study like this could never conclusively prove anything unless they conducted this test with literally every type of weed known to man.

Well the thing is when you're dealing with good weed grown indoors or even good outdoor. IE: Hightimes looking shit. The type of people growing that stuff cherish their weed and their work. I don't smoke regularly anymore but for the past ten years and on occasion when I do smoke I only smoke the best. I don't smoke regular weed cause for one it's a total waste and the growers of that don't give a shit how it's treated. So yeah, the article is total poo poo.

The packaging doesn't mention this so obviously it's not true. In fact the packaging mentions no ingredients at all, it's just a plastic ziplock.

well it should be common knowledge that inhaling any foreign substance into your lungs for an extended period of time is going to do damage. what gets me is how many people there are out there who still believe that weed is totally harmless.

i know this isn't on topic but a lot of people still say that marijuana isn't addictive, well not physically addictive. but what they don't seem to realize is that those studies that show this were conducted in the 60's and 70's, when the weed was much weaker than it is now. THC levels in weed have skyrocketed since then. and being a long time smoker, i can tell you that it does get addictive. luckily i've managed to cut way down on how much i smoke, but for a while there i would definitely say i was addicted. i couldn't go a day without it.

That doesn't have to be a physical addiction, I'd say you were mentally dependent on it for a while. Psychological dependency definitely occurs with weed.

The ganja is definitely physically addictive. Try stopping in an instant and you won't be able to sleep at night and you get mad tired during the day.

The whole "ooh weed is harmless" story is such utter bullshit.

First off, you're burning something and inhaling the smoke. That can't be good, period.
Second, these days chemicals may be added to whatever weed you're smoking.
Third, when you burn something, a chemical reaction takes place. Something + oxygen. That itself can create a whole host of chemicals. Chemicals aren't produced in factories, people, everything is "a" chemical. And various substances can be created when you burn shit.
