We have St.Nick on the 6th. He puts stuff in your stocking. No1 else I know does it so I'm not sure where it came from.
Santa Claus and St. Nick both come from Saint Nicholas, a Turkish guy who spread things like joy, presents and venereal diseases. In The Netherlands, Belgium and some other countries you have "Sinterklaas" (I think Santa Claus originated from this character ... they're very similar) who brings presents on December 5th and puts gifts in your stockings. He is also accompanied by Zwarte Piet (Black Pete), who is a person of dark skin, big red lips and nappy hair.

Perfect imagery for children: A white guy who resembles God and his black helpers.
