Mad mom allegedly assaults teacher who scolded child
April 6, 2005
DALLAS -- A teacher allegedly unhappy over the treatment of her daughter was charged with assault for allegedly grabbing another teacher's hair, dragging her across a classroom and punching her in the face.
Pauline Baines, a high school teacher, was angry because middle school teacher Mary Oliver had told her daughter to quit loitering by lockers and go to class, Dallas school district spokesman Donald Claxton said.
Baines, 45, was charged Friday with assault with bodily injury and freed on $2,500 bail, according to Dallas County Jail records. She was placed on paid administrative leave.
Girl told to go to class
Oliver, who teaches seventh-grade science at a school for gifted students, said she suffered a concussion, broken ribs and bruises.
Claxton said Oliver had talked to Baines' daughter, an eighth-grader, and several other students about going to class. Students are not allowed to be at their lockers during class time, Claxton said.
The girl went to the school counselor, who called Baines and told her what had happened, Claxton said.
Mom teaches nearby
Oliver said Baines, who teaches at a high school near the middle school, was yelling at her as she entered the classroom.
''I didn't raise a finger,'' Oliver said. ''I didn't raise my voice. I didn't do anything to aggravate the situation.''
She also said she did not single out Baines' daughter.
Baines, who teaches in a program that allows high school students to work in neighborhood businesses, did not immediately return calls seeking comment Monday or Tuesday.
