Go to Kenya, don't leave without going on a Safari.

Nairobi and Mombassa are both very beautiful. Mombassa is the Beach... very exotic.

To be honest some time ago I thought that only a minority of people have a good life in Africa.
Like people from Africa visiting the net, speaking English - damn, in Africa they must be considering to be elite or something.

Then I saw a TV report on African children that have no drinking water nearby and then they were kids walking around with their cameraphones taking pictures of the TV crew and I was like - wtf?

^^Umhm, there is loads of natural beauty here believe me.

This is one of my favorite pictures of Nairobi. I saw it on that forum. Actually plenty of us like this picture because it shows a unique aspect of the city. It has a natural game park right outside it.

Artsygirl: Hopefully I'll end up in Perth to study for my Masters in July next year........I mean, if all goes well in life. I've got loads to see in Australia, if the cost of living doesn't get the better of my foreign student life.
Oh Africa has natural beauty up the wahzoo, I just mean between metropolitan and nature I take nature. I love places where you can see very little (or no) human interference.

Perth is nice, alot of UKers go there.

One of my friends was born and raised partly in Africa and visits her family over there regularly. I expected poverty everywhere but she told me how life there wasn't much different from here. She doesn't see poor people on every street like they show on TV.

When I said people shouldn't be surprised that Africa has cities and that not everyone is poor, I meant most people I know believe all Africans are half-naked, dying of famine, like you see on TV ads for African charities. Clearly 95% of Africa's population isn't living in extreme poverty. A good portion is, but I'm pretty sure not to that extent. African countries are like Haiti, suffering from corrupted government. Where do you think all the $ collected for the Haitian earthquake went to? Certainly not to help the Haitian people.
The average percentage of people under the poverty line in sub-saharan africa is around 50%, I'm guessing your friend is comparatively well-off in her home country, as many african immigrants are. The thing that bothers me is when people think africans live in straw huts and walk around naked eating bananas all day. My girl who's nigerian was once asked if they had cars where she's from, and this kind of ignorance isn't really that uncommon here.

It was years, years ago. Whenever they showed Africa in the media they did't really show any cities.
It was usually about people living amongst animals, children dying of hunger and thirst, living in some ugly tents etc. So I was ignorant as it wasn't interesting enough to read about it any further.
It was hard for me to believe when a friend of mine who loves Africa told me about how cities there look, higher education etc. And yeah, I thought it's only for the richest people there.

Yeah that's a similar level of ignorance I used to represent.
We obviously have these people too like Africa has children dying of thirst but most people are normal.

Well that's like people who think that Canada is part of the USA and call us Americano. NO we are not American, we are Canadian.

Then there are the people who think we live in igloos. No we don't. We are not all inuits. Actually inuits are a minority of the Canadian population.
