«They say pussy and paper is poetry, power and pistols»

I don’t’ see a reason why the topic was closed so let’s continue this talk.

The Line: «They say pussy and paper is poetry, power and pistols»

How do you understand that, what Pac really meant?

After listening to the song I came to the conclusion. Notice that it goes poetry, power and pistols. Not poetry power. Do you hear the same?

Mikehelix made some good points but he was wrong. Pac asserts that pussy and paper is poetry, power, and pistols. Because that’s the way he starts third verse – he is not saying “they”, he indeed makes clear that it’s what he is thinking.

Pac would not put that line just for alliteration; henceforth he puts it 2 times in one song.

The line has some deep meaning and I hope we’ll be able to have some nice discussion right here.

What Pac was saying?

I think it's used as a sort of synonym, when you have pistols, power and poetry you get pussy and paper. When you have paper and pussy you get pistols, poetry and power, something like that.

I don't believe there is a "wrong" or "right" interpretation of this, and I didn't claim to have the "right" answer to begin with.

I think that the parallel with the intro to Bomb First, "it's about niggaz & bitches(pussy), power & money(paper), ridahz & punks(..picturin pitiful punk niggaz..), which side are you on?" is no coincidence. the first verse Pac is riding on his enemies, there's no question about that. there are certainly 2 different sides to choose... but "they say" that they are the same, are they are punks. the argument this interpretation is based on is stronger than any other argument I've seen. truly, this is pretty intuitive in my opinion.

alliteration of strong popping sounds is present throughout the ENTIRE song not just this part. these "popping" sounds remind me first instinct of a gun. I was gonna cite examples but there's so many it would take some time that I don't have at the moment.

however, you do bring up a very important point that I never thought about, and I thank you for noticing this - I've changed my opinion. Pac does NOT start out the third verse with "they say." and, not only this, the rhyme directly after that is not "picturin pitiful punk niggaz... as I position myself to clock g's." instead, the next rhyme is "pray to the heavens 357z to tha sky & I hope I'm forgiven 4 thug livin when I die..." which is basically the OPPOSITE message of the first verse. he's praying to God and hoping that he's forgiven when he dies. later, he says "I wonder if heaven got a ghetto for thug niggaz," and "don't shed a tear for me nigga I aint happy here." this is very personal for Pac - it's no longer about pitiful punk niggaz in this verse, it's about his lifestyle.

so, based on your post, I've changed my opinion of the meaning of this line. I think Pac had two different meanings for the same line in the beginning and end of this song. with the two conflicting sides of himself that Pac frequently referred to (for example "it's the hard side that likes to blow up my good side" , the quotes about him talking about being a Gemini, and countless other examples) I think this is not an extraordinary idea at all.

as explained above. I think that surely the line in the first verse means what I said earlier. however, with such a sentimental, change-of-heart, religious, and personal third verse, I think he says "pussy and paper is poetry, power, and pistols, plottin on murderin mothafuckaz before they get you..." almost as if he's confessing the experiences he has had with the rap game. we know that Me Against the World was a very sentimental and personal cd for Pac, and I think that by saying this line and immediately afterwards asking for forgiveness for his sins, he brings an entirely different meaning to the same line. because again, you're right - he does not begin the line with "they say."

this is just an interpretation. I really don't think there's a right or wrong per say when looking at lyrics like these, especially Pac's lyrics since we all know they're as deep as lyrics get. instead there are just stronger arguments about different interpretations.

I think Pac just wanted to use alliteration (using a lot of words that start with the same letter). No more.

its gotta be more than that. I think you need to revert those words.

"They say pussy and paper is poetry, power and pistols"

Poetry of good lyrics, tracks = fame, money
money = power
pistols = protection from jealous niggaz
^which takes us back to power.

something like that...you feel me?

I still haven't come across an explanation that I have been satisfied with as of yet, even if I have already come across its meaning.

This song is full of alliteration! : -

" They say pussy and paper is poetry, power, and pistols,

Picturin' pitiful punk niggas coppin' pleas,

Pockets is packed with presidents, pursue your riches,

Polishin' pistols, prepare for battle, pass the pump,

Picture perfection pursuin' paper with a passion,

Pissin while practicin' how to pimp and be a player,

Sick of psychotic society, somebody save me "

That's was nice Mikehelix. Again you made some good points and main is that:

"There is not right or wrong per say when looking at lyrics like these, especially Pac's lyrics since we all know they're as deep as lyrics get. Instead there are just stronger arguments about different interpretations."

Yes, I can interpret it in so many ways, that my head is blowing up. Only Pac himself new where he was going, it's like when you write a line and only after listening (reading) it you marvel and say "wow, what really i tried to say?".

I believe Dante gave the answer.
Well "on superficial look, that's what people think rap music is about." - it's true but notice that it will go only for the first time Pac says that line.

Yeshua, yes this song is full of alliteration but that doesn't mean that it just rhymes words. Pac went deep and made it with lyrical brilliance.

Damn, that’s what poetry is about!!!

great thread Ashur. I'm positive Pac didn't just do this simply for alliteration, and it should be clear to everyone who replied to this thread too if you read my posts (I also made a long post on the previous thread like this that was closed) and Dante's quote. we all know Tupac wouldn't be one to make a rhyme and rap it just to "sound cool" or to "look cool."

i think it was word play, as is the whole song. maybe he used it twice to kill verse time like he did on Lord Knowz "if i wasn't high....."

I know the definition of alliteration and what poetry is about, thank you for reminding me Ashur. I am not trying to say Tupac is just rhyming words.

I have deciphered the meaning of: " They say Pussy and Paper is Poetry, Power and Pistols ".

First look at a definition of Poetry: A quality of beauty or emotional power.

Now look at the sentence: 'They say Pussy and Paper is Poetry, Power and Pistols '

Tupac is defining poetry by differetiating the sexes:

# Pussy and Paper - They complement each other - Women like Money - a quality of beauty.

# Power and Pistols - Too go together - Men like War (and such use Pistols) - Emotional Power

So what Tupac is saying really is ' Pussy and Paper is Poetry, (just like) Power and Pistols (is).

Two different things that go together and the beauty of it.

THEY say. not I say.
THEY are the people who are hypercritical of rap music, and THEY think that rap music is about sexuality (pussy), money (paper), poetry (rhyming), power (manipulation and influence), pistols (violence). i maintain that this line reflects the same thought process as don't stop the music.
