Humor in Pac's music

#1
So I was thinking about what a funny person Tupac often was in interviews and in other footage that you see on DVD's and stuff. I thought about that comment that Frank Alexander made in Thug Angel, about how Pac missed his vocation, that he should have become a comedian etc. Also, a lot of other people who knew him seem to bring up this aspect of his personality when they talk about him in interviews.

I found myself agreeing with them that Pac could be really funny at times and I thought: Pac was probably indeed one of the more funnier rappers in the business. So, out of boredom, I tried to come up with an example from his lyrics to confirm this, but then it hit me: in his music Pac showed this side of him a lot less. Now of course that's not so weird, seeing that Pac mostly talked about serious topics (such as social injustice etc.) in his lyrics. But even so: for a guy who, many people say, had such a passion for making jokes and all that, he sure doesn't have many real jokes in his lyrics.

I mean, if you look at these other, punchlinerappers, or rappers like Eminem: they often make songs with seemingly the sole purpose of making people laugh. Obviously, that's also got to do with their style.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is: can you come up with examples from Pac's MUSIC where he is trying to be funny? So, to clearify, where he has the actual INTENT to make you laugh? I mean, he was prolly the rapper who laughed the most in his songs, (wether it was that "fake laugh" as Shock G put it, or a genuine laugh) but that wasn't always because of the funny content of his lyrics.

I had to think pretty hard and I came to the following conclusions (correct me if you think if I'm wrong):

-Pac has never, in his entire career, spit an entire verse that was meant as a comical verse.
- when Pac WAS being funny, making jokes etc., it was often in a diss track or in a rant in the intro or outro

So basically, this thread is meant as a sort of challenge to you all, to come up with an example from one of his songs, where Pac is making jokes or something to that effect. Preferably, an ACTUAL LINE FROM A VERSE and not just something he says (spoken). Also, something he INTENDED to be funny with, so not something that just makes you laugh because it is a typical Pac-comment or something. If you can't come up with anything meeting these standards, THEN you can also say what makes you laugh listening to one of his songs even if Pac didn't mean for it to be funny. So I hope y'all catch the drift.

I'm sorry, this post has become way longer than I meant for it to be, because I didn't really know what I was gonna say before I started typing lol... Anyway, I just thought I'd make a thread that deals with the content of Pac's songs, since you don't really see those a lot anymore, strangely enough. So, I hope you won't bash this thread, but try to contribute to it in a positive way. 'Cause I think it's my first thread ever here and I'd hate to be disappointed... :p

I will close this post with a couple of examples, to give you an idea of what I mean:

From "Bury Me A G": "I'll be a 10 minute brother for a two dollar ho"

From "All Bout U": "You probably crooked as the last trick; wanna laugh at how I got my ass caught up with this fat bitch?
Thinkin I had her but she had me in the long run
It's just my luck I'm stuck with fuckin with the wrong one, huh!"

From "Hit 'Em Up OG": "Heard they call you Big Poppa how you figure? 'Cause to me you'll always be a phony, fat *****"

And two examples that are kind of against my own rules ('cause not rapped)

From "Hit 'Em Up": The first line, you all know it. ;) That's probably the only one with an actual sort of punchline too lol...

And of course the infamous "fluffy white rabbit" line from "What'z Ya Phone #"

One final comment, I also don't really mean similees and metaphores, because they are almost by definition meant to be funny in a rap song. So "changing ****** futures like a schizophrenic palm reader" from "What'cha Gonna Do" isn't really what I mean either, but I'll allow it, lol...

So, time for some feedback. Can you all come up with a good example or (otherwise) talk about what y'all think about humor in Pac's music in general? Good luck.. :thumb:

Going off on Wendy Williams at the end of Why U Turn On Me was more of a comical diss than a verse.

Also, it's "I'll be a 10 minute brother for a two dollar ho"

sorry that i cant come up wit any examples but pac was like jerry lewis or jim carey...

pac as soon as he stepped in a studio he rapped very serious about death luv etc. but on the street he always had a smile on and made jokes and shit wit his homies

lets take jerry lewis or jim carey both very great comedians but take a look in their private life, jerry was full of anger all the time in private life never smiled and shit also beat his wife, not long time ago there was a interview wit some of jim careys friends, they said carey is definitly not the type of guy he plays in all his movies...

"I'm in a bucket but I'm ridin it like it's a Benz" has always been kind of funny to me. And I Get Around has some funny lines to me:

"Back to get wreck
All respect to those who break their neck to keep their hoes in check
Cause oh they sweat a brother majorly
And I don't know why, your girl keeps paging me
She tell me that she needs me, cries when she leaves me
And every time she sees me, she squeeze me, lady take it easy!
Hate to sound sleazy, but tease me, I don't want it if it's that easy
Ayo bust it, baby got a problem saying bye bye
Just another hazard of a fly guy
You ask why, don't matter, my pockets got fatter
Now everybody's looking for the latter
And ain't no need in being greedy
If you wanna see me dial the beeper number baby when you need me
And I'll be there in a jiffy
Don't be picky, just be happy with this quickie
But when you learn, you can't tie me down
Baby doll, check it out, I get around"

Last verse:

"Finger tips on the hips as I dip, gotta get a tight grip, don't slip
Loose lips sink ships, it's a trip
I love the way she licks her lips, see me jocking
Put a little twist in her hips cause I'm watching
Conversations on the phone til the break of dawn
Now we all alone, why the lights on?
Turn 'em off, time to set it off, get you wet and soft
Something's on your mind, let it off
You don't know me, you just met me, you won't let me
Well if I couldn't have it (silly rabbit) why you sweating me?
It's a lot of real G's doing time
Cause a groupy bit the truth and told a lie
You picked the wrong guy baby if you're too fly
You need to hit the door, search for a new guy
Cause I only got one night in town
Break out or be clown, baby doll are you down?
I get around"

Like he says "I've been known to clown and get around."

Lol, you're right. My bad. I know that, I didn't even see I wrote it differently. The way I wrote took the whole clou out of the joke, lol. Anyway, it's edited now.

And you're right about that part going at Wendy Williams, but indeed, that's not a verse. Like I said, usually when he was making jokes it was in a rant at the end of a song and also often when he was dissing people.

Anyway, I'll add some more to keep the thread going:

This one from "Old School", I'm not sure if Pac meant for it to be funny, because it's also a poignant observation, but the contrast is what makes it funny to me:
"I'm playin skelly, ring to leavey, or catch a kiss
before the homies in my hood learned to smack a bitch"

Also JeremyM you're right about those "I Get Around" verses. Although I don't think every line was really specifically funny, it's more the whole vibe to the song and the way he raps it. You can definitely tell he was "clowning". I think he did that a lot in his songs: the lyrics themselves aren't especially funny but the way he delivers them makes you smile. (hence probably why he himself laughed so much on record too)

Anyway, another spoken one, from "Picture Me Rollin'":
"Can you see me ho?" Haha. Again, when he's dissing someone, but still fuckin' funny. The way he says it, haha..

Also, when he's imitating voices of other people or making other people say something or whatever, it's usually funny too: Like in "Made ******" where he's imitating the cop, or on "Souljah's Revenge" the "Explain the meaning?" part and the "I said FREEZE you miserable black son of a bitch!" in this typical 'white' voice of a cop. And that guy that does the intro to "Bomb First" is pretty funny as well.

But these all aren't examples from his lyrics really..

I do have a funny example of misinterpretation of lyrics:
I remember when I first heard "Happy Home" where he goes
"you can stay with my momma but keep the drama to a low, you never call the police, I never call you bitch OR ho"
I always heard: "You can stay with my momma but keep the drama to a low, You never call the police, I'll never call you bitch A ho", which obviously changes the meaning of the line completely and doesn't fit in with the song at all. I never got it, I was always like, 'why would he say something mean like that in that type of song?' LOL.

Wait I have a good one, from "****** Nature":
"Missed me with that 'buy me this, buy me that'-syndrome shit,
Bitch get a job if you wanna be rich"

Lol, anyone else got any others?

One of my favorites is a line from U Don't Have 2 Worry

"Say they shot me in my nuts/ out of luck quit it/bullshittin nigga cuz I'm still fuckin yo bitch"

The way he said it was just funny as hell to me

"And I, change the diapers and clean the shit The tables are turned I can't take this" From Part Time Mutha lol I just laughed when i imagined pac doin that

Is it that 2pac had a sense of humour about death? Because if so, then that's what I see a lot of in his lyrics; laughing at death in the face. I could think of lots of examples.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

@ Kadafi Son: it's:"Niggaz lookin' like Larry Holmes, flabby and sick"-

Good one, although it IS against the thread's rules, no similees remember? ButI don't care, lol. :)

How 'bout this one? Probably not really meant as a joke or anything but I still think it is funny, since it was aimed at one of the (then) most powerful people in the world, while Pac had barely established himself a big name artist: From "Last Wordz":

"Dan Quayle, don't you know you need your ass kicked? Where were you when it was ****** in a casket?"

And basically all the other Dan Quayle-bashing from S4MN haha:

"Boom-Bam-Boom it's a stick-up
Vice-President Dan Quayle eat a dick up"

I can just see the look on Dan Quayle's face when his people told him:

"Uhm, Sir.., Remember that animalistic, ultra-violent, menace from one of those, what do they call it, GHET-TOS? He gave a message to you Sir, on of those rap music albums."

Dan Quayle: "Ah,yes, what was his name again, Toopack Shaker? I remember him, my popularity went up in upper-class society by ten percent because of those comments you told me to make. Anyway, what about him? What did he say?'

"Eat a dick up, Sir..."

...

Dan Quayle: "WHAAAAT???!!? Why that little son of a ..."

"Sir, don't you know need your ass kicked?"

Dan Quayle: . . .

Gotta say this is actually a great idea for a thread.. even when I used to come here more often you barely saw those..

Can't think of anythng tho', and I must admit I don't remember Hit'Em Up's first line, what is it again?
