That's Right, I Said It

DJ Premier > Dr. Dre

Dre has a great sound, but I think the fact that he is a producer/rapper instead of a producer/DJ subtracts from his music in some ways, from hip-hop perspective at least. Even if you like Dre's sound better, is the gap really large enough to compensate for Premier's scratching, sampling (both musical and vocal, the latter he is untouchable in), and his music's flirtatious relationships with the vocals?

Premo is the prototype of hip-hop production.

Premo hasnt really been relevant in the last 10 years and hasnt dropped anything I would consider classic.

Dre has.

Dre > Premo.

aloivas is on a distinguished road
nah.

1. eazy-duz-it
2. straight outta compton
3. no one can do it better
4. livin' like hustlers
5. efiz4zaggin *
6. the chronic
7. doggystyle

* this is his best work, imo. people who doubt dre's production skills should listen this record. and i mean really analyse it.. check all the different samples used, listen to them, and then listen to the way he combines and arranges them to produce the final product.

premier is a better dj, no doubt about that. as far as mixing, scratching, etc, he is better. he probably has a better ear for samples, and is probably better at looping them as desired.

however, dre is a better all round producer. in terms of composing music, in terms of arranging a combination of samples and/or live instruments and/or computer generated music, in terms of directing a team of musicians, in terms of catering to a particular audience/s, in terms of understanding what particular sound will go with what particular rapper/singer to produce a monumental/groundbreaking hit. in terms of SONGWRITNG, dre is better.

didn't even mention in my list above the work he has done on those classic OSTS in the mid 90's (deep cover, murder was.., above the rim, poetic justice), his work with (most notable) 2pac, eminem, 50 cent, the game, busta rhymes, xzibit, and countless other artists. + "...presents the aftermath" and "2001"

he's been heavily involved with at least 3 and - depending on who you are - up to 5 of the top 20 hip hop albums of all time.

oh yeah, and if you don't think dre can dj, listen to those rodium swap meet mixtapes from 86 or whatever, pre-NWA.

premier is probably no. 2 ever though.

Because he hasnt really pushed the envelop at all, he's just been DJ Premo. He hasnt done anything new, his dope beats are the same as they were during his golden era. His classic beats are dope too, sure, but they are outdated now, and I dont think he has remained relevant in regards to creating anything new or setting any new trends. But dope, sure they are dope, as dope as they ever were. Classic? Not recently.

I agree with most of what you wrote, but I gotta say, Premo pulled out some serious heat for Christina Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man" last year. While not a hip-hop track, it's a fucking great song.

I feel what you're saying. I've heard some real good Primo beats in the last few years though. I REALLY liked the "Watch How It Go Down" joint with Termanology.
