Because its hard to play in some places in South America like Boliva and Ecuador. But Brazil don't play great anymore and don't create enough chances, and Argentina can be bullied out of games pretty easily.

i cant understand why Argentina or Brazil need to finish top. If they finish fourth is it not enough? they still qualify. If they win the group then expectations go sky high for the World Cup. Remember when Argentina walked the South American section for the 2002 World Cup qualifiers. They were built up to the last. they were certain champions according to some people. Instead they flopped badly and went home in the first round. Now, on the flipside Brazil performed very poorly in the same qualifiers. They finished 4th in the end i think. They went through about 3 managers until Scolari took charge. It was deemed a crisis and a shambles in Brazilian football. They qualified anyway in 4th spot. Expectations were relatively low(this is Brazil we are talking about) going into the World Cup. The team was written off. What happend? they won the world cup and were by far the best team in it. In the 1994 qualifiers, Colombia were awesome in their run to qualification. They even thrashed Maradona's Argentina 5-0. The team was built up to that last prior to the actual tournament. The team flopped badly and went home in the first round. Such was the hype and expectation that a player was killed after scoring an og. so it might be better for either of these nations to just about make it in 3rd or 4th.

South American qualifying is extremely tough. Teams have to play 18 games and all the teams are able to hold their own. There was a time when teams like Venezuela, Ecuador and even Paraguay was an easy match but not anymore. South AMerican sides really earn their right to play at the world cup where as rubbish Asian teams like Iran or Saudi Arabia get a free ticket.

True, SA qualification is tough, but it's not a thing of the recent few years (Bra. and Arg. sucking in it). It's like they manage to qualify by the skin of their teeth every time.
Bobby is 100% right about expectations, thoiugh. I remember the 94 Colombia team and that poor defender that got murdered by some idiot. I forgot his name. I will look it up. ====>>
Andres Escobar was his name. Poor bloke. RIP.

"The BBC issued an apology the following day after its pundit Alan Hansen commented on another match that "the Argentine defender wants shooting for a mistake like that."
That's just wrong, lol.

Paraguay are playing great. The standard in South America with the so called lesser nations has improved over the last few years, and plus their qualifers are so exciting to watch.
